We all know Obama sucks.
We also know there isn't a Republican out there right now (like Reagan or W) who can carry the mantel.
Thompson was wrong in 2008.  Old, conservative boring.
Right now, I think the electorate would love Old, conservative and boring.
Once bitten...However

[#2]
Yeah, as much as I loved Fred and would've loved to see him carrying the banner in 2008, I just can't see folks getting behind him now after the clusterfuck of a campaign he ran last time.
2/4/2010 9:31:50 AM EDT
[#3]
Fred is a great conservative but he doesn't have the fire and drive to be President.

2/4/2010 9:32:07 AM EDT
[#4]
Well, he certainly sounds presidential.
2/4/2010 9:32:08 AM EDT

In before the bitter former-supporters of Fred.

ETA:  Dammit, too slow...

He didn't want the job back then.  He's even old now so I'm sure he really doesn't want the job.  He won't be seeing any more of my money.

Screw Fred (even though I like him), but I'd prefer to "have" his wifey!
2/4/2010 9:34:04 AM EDT
[#8]
He didn't want it.  He coasted and it showed.
2/4/2010 9:35:43 AM EDT
[#9]
Unfortunately, the person who doesn't need the job and doesn't have the 'fire in the belly' is exactly the type of person who we NEED for president.

However, that person will never be elected. It will always be the ambitious, power-hungry candidates.
2/4/2010 9:37:19 AM EDT
[#10]
He practically mailed it in. I was really surprised by his lack of drive in the campaign - maybe he realized that no republican could win the election anyways at that time and just didn't care.

Whoever runs next time will have to deal with a very charasmatic campaign (regardless of how much of a liar and fake he is), assuming they even run osama the next time around. However, at the rate things are going now, it may be a write-in for republicans anyways.
2/4/2010 9:48:28 AM EDT

Robo Cheney, baby!
2/4/2010 9:51:06 AM EDT

I liked old, conservative, boring, Fred Thompson.
I think he realized early on he wasn't in the shape needed to carry on the job of President.
Too bad too, He may have been a good one.

[#13]
For the most part I think he is a good dude, but I was a little dissapointed when he ordered Benson and Novak to arrest and prosecute the pro-life doctor who mislead that pregnant girl to ensure her pregnancy would develop past the legal time limit for an abortion.
2/4/2010 9:54:47 AM EDT

I had such high hopes.

spot on

he blew it
2/4/2010 9:58:42 AM EDT

Everyone else here nailed it.  I was a HUGE Thompson supporter, but it was very obvious he had no interest in running a real campaign.  Unfortunate.
2/4/2010 10:03:06 AM EDT
[#18]
Fred saw the writing on the wall: NOBODY was going to beat Obama and there was no point in wasting $ and banging head against the wall in trying to do so.

Regardless of what some cranks say about needing to have someone to get the conservative base out to vote,it's absurd to think that more people sulked at home because of McCain instead of voting against Obama.

I don't think he'll bother next time around.

Exactly!

It's really too bad that the man ran such a frigin' boring campaign.

Even Ron Paul beat him in many states.  No shot unfortunately.

I agree with more-or-less everything above. I like Fred. Us Tennesseans knew for years (over a decade, really) that he was being groomed for a run. I hate that he flopped, and as much as I liked him, we need to look elsewhere.

I can't figure out why he ran in the first place.  Pissed me off, I was a big supporter until I realized that it was nothing more than a stunt to get attention.

Fred was my Second choice last time. Having voted for him (because the front runner dropped out) in the primary, I'd say that Fred just doesn't have the energy to pull this off.
2/4/2010 10:19:22 AM EDT
[#30]
I believe he would have made an excellent President.  However, he was unable to "send a tingle" up peoples' legs.
2/4/2010 10:21:40 AM EDT
[#31]
Old and bitter was not Fred's problem (hell, that was his charm).

It was lack of ability to get and maintain an erection. He needed Viagra for his campaign, it just lay there usless for anything but pissing.
2/4/2010 10:34:20 AM EDT
[#32]
I find it amusing people still think Freds campaign was anything other than the carefully focus grouped and marketed spoiler it was.

He had no intention of being president, he didn't figure that out early on, he knew it from go.

Scott Brown looks like a promising rising star in the GOP. Charismatic, looks "dashing", and down to earth.

Fred would be the perfect candidate for us, but he failed miserably in his '08 efforts.

There's got to be someone out there we can put forward to demolish zero and his monkeys....

His job was to kill the 60th vote, over time his conservative cred will fall away.

I voted for him against Obama in 2004 and liberals still call me a racist for opposing almost everything the President has proposed.

(Off topic, but it still pisses me off)

He came in and completely overthrew the democrat agenda. What else do you want?

only you guys could downplay such a huge blow to the Democrat agenda, by saying he probably isn't conservative "enough"

Brown was a huge victory, but the guy is still a mass rep.
Thats as good as we could hope, but no way I am getting behind him running for president until he shows something.

Absolutely wrong....

In order for someone to 'have what it takes' to be President, they *NEED* to have the drive, motivation, and desire - and the ability to communicate such to the people & the world...

P.S. None of the past Presidents really *needed the job*, going back at least to Wilson - they have all come from fairly well-to-do backgrounds...

It is the desire to have the job & the vision to accomplish something with it, that is required.

Too liberal. Not pro-life.

He's in a great spot right now...

If we could only get his 'other half' to run for Kerry's seat (Romney) we'd be set - both of them in a place where they can actually do some good.
