I'm looking at having a people of machinery in Chicago shipped to Tampa, FL. It weighs 7500 lbs and is approximately 7 feet tall and 5x7 feet in other dimensions. How would I go about doing that and what should I expect it to cost?

Ask at PrecisionMachinist.com.  Someone there will have good info and contacts, if not offer to make a bid.

Start calling freight companies and get some quotes. Just google around and you'll find the big names you see on the road.

You'll need to know how it's getting picked up and delivered. Will it fit in a standard trailer, or will it need to be on a flat bed? Do you have docks or forklifts at both locations to load/unload?

I would guess it's going to be expensive. 7,500 lbs is pretty hefty for a single freight item, and the footprint is bigger than 2 standard pallets.

ETA: I have heard good things about http://www.freightquote.com/. That will give you a good starting point.

All good suggestions so far.

You can put it up yourself on load boards like getloaded.com and see who you can get to take it there.

My company would charge over $2K + FSC but it would get there in under 24 hours. We do expedited.

Fuel is a bitch right now and that is a long run so it is going to be expensive.

Another option is rent a one way Penske and run it yourself over a weekend.

Whatever you do don't ship it USF Bestway, Con-Way, RAC or Saia freight.
They are like a bunch of raccoons.
Whatever they don't fuck up they shit on.
