Looks good. My 740 is still sitting at paint. I have no idea if they've even started it.

Almost have a 306 that got zapped wrapped up. Waiting on one more sensor. Body count so far: machine and engine ECMs, display, both joysticks, both keypads, wiper controller, travel pedals, 2 pressure sensors, DPF differential pressure sensor, back up camera, radio, and IMU. About 20k in parts.

When i did a lightning strike 336 i got it up and running, did a fuel system verification test and that showed more failed sensors. Replaced those and then had failed injectors.

Oh, and a worklight too...maybe. Other than the sensors, everything else that fried was on the CAN.

I'll have to see if this one has any tests like that. I put a couple of hours on it after recalibrating everything, and other than the last sensor that was acting up, it's been good. I am sure something else is going to die at some point, but who knows what/when.

Pulled the drums off the camper.  Cleaned, inspected, repacked the bearings, new seals, everything looked good.  Batteries and propane installed.  Slathered some new sealant on the roof. I hate using that stuff, but until I can remove all of it, prime it, and use some quality stuff, it'll have to do.

So now I'm doing the same to my 7x14 enclosed twin axle trailer.  But, it needs bearings.  First one I pulled apart, the outer bearing was toast.  After waiting for parts, I got the first one back together last night, and called it a night.  Also installed black center caps and chrome lug nuts (had them laying around, had bought 100 pack years ago for our previous Jeeps, but our new Jeeps use metric ones, these are 1/2-20).

After work today is back to my parents' house to do front calipers on my dad's 19 cherokee trailhawk.  One caliper seized last weekend doing the brakes, found that out when I was bedding them in.

Since Raybestos went TU with most of the other First Brands, RA had reman calipers cheap, no core.  $112 for 2 calipers with shipping minus 5%.  Locally, they're at least $100 ea.

I’d like to choke the fuck out of whatever engineer that designed the water tanks on Cat double drum rollers.

Remove cab.
Remove cab support.
Then you can remove tank.

I will say under the cab was a huge frame crack. So that’s a plus. What a mess.

Trailer update... pulled the 3rd drum off the trailer.  Friction material hits the ground.  FU!  Ordered $400 worth of drums and brake hardware, fuck it, replace it all.  Won't have to worry about it for at least 10 years or more.

I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a new truck. Got rid of the old f150 and got a 7.3 F250 Tremor.  Looks like i can get Forscan and customize a bunch of features. Anyone use it?

Yup, I Forscan the hell out of my truck (F150). Messed with how things display on the dash, I've got aftermarket headlights with a halo ring that will activate amber with the turn signal, then back to white when canceled. Adjusted my speedo to be dead nuts on GPS with large tires. Need to get around to do the Raptor wheel swap so I can use paddle shifters and a heated wheel. Even used it last night to monitor oil pressure as I was driving, since the 5.0 likes to tick/clatter when hot and low idle, I wanted to make sure I wasn't dropping too much pressure.

Any shop bros moved up into management? It looks like we’ll have a position coming open soon, and I expect it will be “offered” to me. Will probably come with a small pay cut, but I can’t turn wrenches forever.

The downside? The shop I’d be leaving would become basically useless, and produces about half the hours for the company. The 1 tech and 1 apprentice that would remain wouldn’t step up, we would have to move someone or hire someone. In the short term it would be me having 5 jobs, or struggling bigly.

The times I’ve entertained moving up would have been to a different company, screwing the current shop wouldn’t be my problem. This is different, and seems like I’d be setting myself up to fail.

The other option is ride it out, maybe they’ll promote our lead service advisor (tried before, he made it 2 weeks and went back to being an advisor…) or someone new comes in and who knows what happens.

Small family owned dealership, no corporate support, limited hiring pool, zero experienced hiring pool. A tough situation that has been blowing through employees lately.

Modern Cadillac is a joke, And it seems like they have been for a long time now.

This XT6 is like close to 80 grand.

And yet, when you push down on the dash controls, they squeak.

I had a Snap-On 1" combo wrench that didn't get finished broached. It was a backup/duplicate wrench that I never used. Needed it one day and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't go over a bolt.

It was difficult to find 2 of those lead donuts in 2.25" diameter for an exhaust.  Apparently every diameter but those are common, and the parts stores don't list something for a '16 WK2 5.7.   Kinda weird because those are used on 2011-2021 WK2's with every engine but the 6.4 and 6.2SC.

Ended up rootin' thru the gaskets at O'Rielley Auto to find one, then brought it to Advance next door, and they found 1 more.

At least I don't have an exhaust leak anymore.

Its been a while.  Still doing diagnostic stuff.  Training some younger fellas.  Some get it, some don't.

I had a set of Hazet E torx sockets that went missing.  They don't make that set anymore and nobody makes an equivalent.  This set had overlap in the drive sizes.  Nobody makes a set like it, so you get like e4 to e8 in a 1/4" and e10 to e14 in 3/8, etc...  My set had through like e12 in 1/4 and e8 to e16 in 3/8 etc...

Its cost me a fucking fortune to buy all the Hazet Etorx and there is nothing quite like them.  I don't like the finish or the incomplete sizes of anything else.  Tekton makes a set on a rail but you buy all three sets to get everything, and they are shiny chrome which I don't want.

I've been going through my toolbox and replacing all my missing and broken tools.  I don't really turn wrenches much so its kinda easy to forget and I don't use any of these tools very much anymore.  It was a pretty good amount of stuff missing, but equally surprising was having every single bit to some of those screwdriver bit sets and stuff. Some of it was scattered but I recovered all of it and put it back in the case.

So I've repaired and maintenanced everything and replaced everything and got a bunch of magnetic socket racks to better organize everything.

Ebay has been a god send for individual sockets and other tools.  We only have good coverage from Mac.  He is there every monday without fail.  None of the other dealers come often or at all.

Have a blessed day.

Yeah, I was debating whether to pull the engine or trans. Haven't done one before and my lead tech says it's easier to pull the trans. But, he also likes to do things a bit different than everyone else.

Do you still have a box in the shop? Or do you guys have like a CDT “area”?

I’m moving out of flagging hours as well, we have capacity in the shop to keep my junk in a box (we have built ins for a night shift). I’ll probably move from the middle down to an end box and thin things out, but a nice roller cart might be a better fit.

🤣 yup that’s about what happened to me me. Yeah I had to pull a harness loose from the engine and all the panels. But I think I was 1 day out, day 2 replace seal and reset engine. Day 3 finish it. Plus a couple hoses and miscellaneous things.

This one's taking a bit. The whole mess with the rear support structure is being a bitch, and SIS's D&A doesn't match up to the machine, so I'm just winging it and ripping it apart. Still gotta drain the tank and disconnect a bunch of lines. Also doesn't help that the most I've done on a grader is minor shit. I should have it out tomorrow, or maybe Thurs morning.

Do you not have a vacuum transducer? Small vacuum on the tank while you pull a few lines is all I remember doing.

Still easier than pulling all the pumps and transmission.

We do, but there's so many lines that run under/connect to the hydraulic tank/coolant reservoir/bulkhead/sheetmetal frame that it would be pointless to do so. Still have to pull the pumps, or at least disconnect the hoses to them, but I figured at that point I'll just pull them. Maybe this one is built differently. Still pulling the engine; that way I don't have to mess with the cooling pack. Also less work underneath the machine. I'll try to remember to snap a pic of the thing tomorrow.

@cat-mechanic this is the tank/battery box support that has to come out to get the sheetmetal support out and the pumps. Could've left it in place but there isn't enough room to go forward with the engine to clear the pumps.

Yeah I left that in place. You have to have all the front sheet metal and supports off then right as you come up, move the engine forward and it will come out.

Ah, gotcha. Didn't seem like there would be enough room to do that.

It’s tight and there’s no extra room. But it will go.

You end up right against the back of the cab coming up. Once the oil pan is clear of the frame you Then spin 90 degrees and pull it out.

I just unloaded a dead 140M, struck by lightning and everything got fried including the grade control. Looks like its going to be very expensive.

Not my problem though as I'm still working on the 936K.  I'm waiting on components, we'll put the new updated diffs in as there was a new service letter just released, got the two new $18K diffs but no availability on the new bolts that hold the ring gear on.

We are still swamped with rebuilds, currently doing an 836K, 988K 775F, 775G and a 982M, I'm doing another 836k as soon as i get this one done, same customer.
Two 775 are heading to the shop any day now,  a 990K towards the end of the year, an 826k is approved, a D11 and 777 are pending and another 982 and 775 are likely.  Next year a 988k and a 988XE are planned.
The 988XE with be one of the first to get a CPT. Maybe something a little different for a change.

Rental 336 got a large dose of DEF in the hydraulic tank (no idea how, they're like 3 or 4 feet away from each other). They tried flushing it out with some new oil; it's still a milkshake. Quoting a complete hydraulic rebuild that the customer is getting billed for. Gonna be spendy.

One of the local counties had a brand new D6. Filled the hydraulic tank with DEF and did nothing, then they ran it until the hydraulics stopped. $85,000 hydraulic clean out and rebuild.

I spent the last few days at something called "National Dealer Technical Days" that Mercedes puts on at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas.  I had last been in 2019.

Monday was spent getting there.  Dinner at 6, and it was a long opening ceremony before dinner.  I was starving due to tight connecting flights and such and hadn't eaten since early that morning.  So it was probably 10pm my time before they unleashed the buffet.

I got to see friends I hadn't seen in a long time, and made a few more. Put faces to names.

Mercedes seemed to spare no expense.  Maybachs everywhere.  Training stuff, assemblies, components, whatever.  They brought truckloads of stuff here.  They had the entirety of the convention center part of the hotel.  They probably spent more on snacks than the GDP of a small country.  Everything was top notch in my opinion.

Time was the biggest constraint for me.  Badly jetlagged and in a very high bandwidth environment was working its magic on me.  Monday night I think I made bedtime at 1am my time, and I had to start the day at 6:30am vegas time which I believe is 3 hours later.  Probably not a big deal for the young guys but when I get locked in a routine it plays hell with my day when its disrupted like this.  Anyway 8am start time for classes.  Most classes are an hour, some are two, and they go until 5pm with a one hour lunch break.

Drinking from a firehose of knowledge is all I can say.  They are sending out a ton of information very quickly in these breakout sessions.  Some are just sitting through death by powerpoint, others are hands on.  Demonstrating using multiple NVH sensors and how to locate noises with them was really cool.  Even when two sensors were just 3 inches apart, you could see which one was closest to the noise because the signal arrived first on the scope screen.

One of the things they have is called the "expo" and its a large room filled with vendors of various equipment selling there wares.  In between vendors the various Mercedes engineering departments had booths as well.  There were a lot of them.  Transmission booth, engine booth, brake booth, etc....  I saw a lot there, met a lot of people face to face, and learned so much in a short amount of time.  Highlights include a torn down M177Evo engine.  The M17x engines are a gigantic pain in the ass, and Mercedes made a lot of improvements to them.  Flat plane crankshaft, elimination of the "camtronic" variable cam lift system, and they eliminated piezo injectors which have been the bane of this engines existence since the beginning.  The transmission booth demonstrated a few neat things, like stripped teeth on a transfer case input shaft and a speed sensor pickup with reversed magnet polarity.  Lots of booths to visit and not nearly enough time to see it all.

Classes are scheduled and an APP was used to track your schedule.  Some folks didn't follow it, they just did whatever.  I ended up in a class that was way over crowded and the content was not very engaging so rather than stand there for an hour I bounced out.  What I saw angered me.  There are guys out playing slots during class time.  Not many mind you, but that isn't what we are here for.  I ran up to my room and back, and spent the rest of the hour in the expo gathering all the information I could.

That day ended and we met at a german restaurant across the street.  Mercedes hired security and we had crossing guards to get there.  It was 108 degrees outside, like stepping in to an oven.  The restaurant was fantastic.  More food than I could imagine.  We had a LOT of everything on the menu.  Soooo much foooooood.  Lots of waste.  The drinks started and just kept coming.  Appetizers to desert, everything.... lots of everything.  I cannot believe how much there was.  It was a good time.

Wednesday I had to leave early to catch my flight so I grabbed a quick bite at lunch and took a ride to the airport to catch a flight that left at 2pm.  I got home around 1:30am thursday morning.  I have lots of notes and pictures to compile and share the information around.
Have a blessed day.

I’ll be heading over tomorrow. I’ve been to plenty of the foreman conferences, sounds like the same deal. The manager version sounds like it’s going to be a different situation.

There are 7 time slots a day for two days. One of the time slots is lunch, so 12 available “class” times. They recommended 2 to 3 classes per day, 4 to 6 total. I guess it’s more of a networking event than a learning opportunity?

The vendors are all software products and internal Mercedes departments. I understand that the FTS guys will be there, but I don’t expect any free Milwaukee 10mm sockets this year

anyone got a source for om648 fuel injectors with IMA codes? I don't want the mystery injectors without them.  p/n A648070038764 or A6480700387  I'm not trying to spend three grand on a set of injectors here.
Have a blessed day.

The S and SL Maybachs were inside, we didn't get to see any of the other new cars. There were cool not new models parked outside, like little easter eggs. Another SL Maybach out back, and a GLS600 that was all black, but had the Maybach logo kind of ghosted into the paint on the top half.
