Plastic soda bottles filled with water (no cap needed). Hit with something of reasonable power they make a nice big boom, can't set anything on fire like exploding targets are super cheap and because the plastic is stretchy the bottle mostly stays in one piece making for easy cleanup. The plastic is still 100% recyclable as well.

Hockey Pucks w/eye hook hanging from a rope...

They are very reactive, and can take a shit load of hits

old fruit is always fun. Oranges or apples react good and no need to clean up the mess as it is all food to the local wildlife. Another fun one is playing cards. A deck of cards makes a ton of fun targets to shoot at.

For fun, i like shooting golf balls out to 200-300yds..I also was lucky enough to score a set of old bowling pins so, that's pretty fun. Other than that, I usually set up my AR500 steel at whatever distance I intend to shoot at.

Anything that is biodegradable or easy to clean up.
Tennis balls, biodegradable clay pigeons, melons, gourds, etc.
I despise shooters who leave their shooting area scattered with shot up plastic containers, broken "beer" bottles, cans, and the such....

250 Watermelons

It's the guy who's driving's APC, range, .50 cal, and watermelons. He owns all sort of awesome toys, and the range is just amazing

I found an Iphone 3gs that someone used as a target on my last trip

At our shooting gravel pit I use plates and hang old coffee mugs from trees.
The stuff is around .5cents at the local charity yardsale place.

buy a 20 pound bag of potatos and a can of red spray paint so you can spot em. They blow up pretty well and are cheap as hell

Golf balls hanging from branches 100+ yards out. Wastes a lot of ammo but the challenge is what makes it fun.

Clay pigeons for pistol shooting instead of steel is a fun alternative.

Good training.   Remote control car big enough to secure a long dowel in it and target on top.  Presto, moving target.    Did a quick search and found this one.    Ha   Fun stuff.

I go to the local Harris Teeter or Lowes grocery store and find the about to spoil produce bin.  They usually have potatoes or apples for a buck a bag.  A .223 round hitting a potato is freaking awesome.  It explodes ridiculously.  Fortunately my buddy has a plasma cutter and has a ton of steel targets in varying sizes and we can shoot on private land up to 300 yards.

Potatoes are the best though.  damn taters!

I think this is a great idea. I thought that I had used everything as a target...spray painted potatoes sound like an excellent, inexpensive idea.

We used to do that then moved on to lifesavers trying not to break them by shooting through the middle.

Generic brand diet soda.  You can usually get a 12 pack for under $2.  They blow up nicely when hit, and the cans are sometimes still shootable after they explode.

Fill bottles 1/3 with water and cap, turn cap down. When shot with something fast, down low, in the water they blow the cap and rocket 50 feet up.

Be sure and clean up after yourself.

Watermelon explode better than pumpkins.

Potatoes shatter nicely with even a 22LR.

I've done food-service size cans of corn, baked beans, mayonnaise, etc.  They are all pretty fun if you have enough gun.

People always love keeping the penny, nickel, quarter with a nice clean bullet hole through it.
(My wife has been carrying one on a key ring since before we met)

Every so often the local Walgreens has these little 6" tall garden knomes on sale for $.50 - $.75 each.  I like the ones that are waving...makes a good sight picture in a scope.

Buy a bunch of cheap plastic cups, fill them with water, freeze.

They explode when hit, very very cheap, clean up is a non-issue.

My kiddo LOVES blowing up ice blocks.

If you're shooting something accurate, shoot at paint-balls...same thing. Cheap and reactive, cleanup is easy.

Also depends on the range. I used to shoot at milk bottle caps tied on a piece of fishing line at 50ft. They'd blow easily with a slight breeze and are challenge and reactive.

Little green plastic army men.  Kids have great fun plinking those with a .22.

I found some zombie pictures online and printed them off to shoot at. I mostly shoot indoors so a small target works OK and it simulates a lot further range. Stuff like this

used electronics

my favorite is steel.  If I ever have a backyard range I'm going to have steel targets everyfuckingwhere.  I made a few and carried them to the range, just a pain in the ass.

We fill 2 liter coke bottles with water and add food color of whatever color is handy. Freeze overnight in the chest freezer. Take to range in a few large coolers. Cut away the plastic bottle with knife and leave the ice block  as the target. A nice purple or blue ice block when hit is pretty spectacular when hit.
We set them up at the 200 yd berm and shoot at them with our iron sighted mil surps.

Shooting at crackers with .22s.

I like busting expired eggs at 100+ with the .17HMR, very nice pop

Expired eggs those things last for months! Do you get them from a grocery store or something?
