Are those really necessary?

They seem to effect traffic adversely.

Would it just not be easier to give a time and place and have people assemble at the cemetery?

I get being respectful for the dead but I saw procession today that was literally about 500 cars long.

They even had a police escort that blocked traffic for them.

I saw one the other day on the backroads that was like 200 cars long an they were all driving Audis.   Then I realized that maybe it was just an Audi driving club taking a tour.   Or maybe the guy died in an Audi crash and all his Audi buddies came to the funeral.   Audi know.

Yes, they are really necessary.

This is why I plan on being cremated.

My ashes will be stuffed in a mortar shell and I'll be lobbed into the cemetary.

INCOMING!!!!

No its not about that.  But other people were doing stupid stuff to get around them.

Even with the police cars,  some non-involved cars were weaving around them trying to get around it.

At a light the cops had positioned themselves so they were blocking traffic.

Several people got out of their cars and started yelling at the cops.

I was not one of them.

Wow.  Of all the things to bitch about.

Have some respect,  wait 2 or 3 minutes for the precession to pass.

Are you the type that loves to honk your horn and holler if the guy in front of you doesn't anticipate the green light and move in a millisecond?

Funeral processions I get. Not to de-rail your thread OP (well maybe). 'tis the season for "Toy Run" and we have one in west central FL. the consists of 2000 give or take sleds jacking up traffic
through half the county.

Really? I mean it's not like someone is dead and there family is mourning there loss and trying to show him some respect.  Find something else to bitch about. Some people truly are selfish.  I had saw everyone making fun of the 13ers and kind of thought it was just bullshit but this really kind of proves it. There a different breed.

It wasnt 2 minutes.

It was more like 20 minutes.

They were coming off a 4 lane road onto a 2 laner and it was like one of those endless freight trains.

People were getting antsy and doing stupid things like trying to turn around and one guy drove onto the sidewalk to get onto a side street.

But don't you think funereal processions are an interesting cultural phenomenon?  From the dawn of civilization people have committed great amounts of resources to people who can't use them.  Pyramids, temples, monuments, etc, what does the average funereal cost today, $9k-$10k?  To each their own in my opinion, I just find it insetting we often honor our dead more than when they were living. I personally would rather people save their time and money and dump me under an apple tree, at least my decomposing body will be useful.

Wow, you guys sure like to construct some wonderful strawmen and dogpile on folks questioning traditions...

It's an interesting question about the need for a police escorted procession in the modern era, not on whether people should be dumped in dumpsters.

OP, some states require their law enforcement to provide funeral escorts (manpower permitting).

Last funeral I went to was for my uncle.  The procession went through a small town, the workers at a small manufacturing factory stepped outside and lined the streets to pay respect for someone they didn't know.  That meant a LOT to my family.

Funerals are for the living.

you usually meet at the church and then drive over to the cemetary I imagine 500+ without the escort would have caused more traffic

the funeral procession is one of the best parts of "Taking Chance"

We average 1.5 funeral escorts a day in our small county.  We do any and all on request.

Same thing where I live. People walking on the street stop, men take off their hats. Funeral processions are about the only thing that will stop everyone and every thing around here. And I like it that way.
