Basnyet was left with the puzzle of recreating those services and resources—and building new ones—without the same steady funds Nepal had received from the U.S. since 1951, when it became Nepal’s first bilateral aid donor. “How do you use all of the skills and the experience you’ve gained in different ways to create an environment where you still felt like you had dignity, second life, all of the knowledge and relationships, within a really short period of time?” Basnyet said. The answer lay in Nepal’s private sector. Though considered a lower-middle-income country with a GDP of $1,447?? ranking 124th of 145 countries tracked by the Harvard Kennedy School Growth Lab, Nepal is ready to grow its economy. It’s sandwiched between the commerce giants of India and China, and with more than 40% of its population between the ages of 16 and 40, is experiencing a “youth bulge” of talent and labor. And without USAID, the small country’s private sector is making strides toward building up Nepal’s economy. Nepalis, afterall, are no strangers to disruptions. A series of widespread Gen Z-led protests last year gave way to a new and young government, led by 36-year-old former rapper Balen Shah. |

On a related topic, stopping the Biden era funneling of massive quantities of aid to Ukraine was a good step. They still manage to keep the Soviets at bay, and are filling Soviet body bags every day. They have developed a thriving drone industry and are now striking deep into Soviet territory. Of course we still give them some aid, and intelligence data, but they are managing quite well. Yeah, Nepal is an economic powerhouse now that USAID has been cut off. And they’re poised to greatly increase their trade with China now that their largest border crossing with them has been wiped out by a massive flood. You sure seem like you’re knowledgeable about Nepal. I’m glad GD has big brained people such as yourself to keep us up on foreign policy. |

Just like welfare leaches in this country, it just allows them to sit back in their Lazy-boys watching TV and stuffing their faces. Cut off the free handouts, and it forces them to stand up and use what they have to progress forward. They may not be an economic powerhouse yet, but now they can at least move in the right direction. Living on eternal handouts, they would never progress economically. |

So we do it to help us while keeping them under our thumb. I know sometimes it is necessary, but it sucks for those countries to be pawns in the greater scheme of things. It essentially boils down to which big fish can keep control of the little ones. |

Yugoslavia didn't survive after the U.S. cut off aid to them in May 1991. They had some other problems going on though.  That's actually the only one I can think of. So yes, good point. Should the government not be allowed to leverage foreign policy at all via the use of handouts/aid? If not, where do you draw the line? |

Just like any welfare queen there's absolutely no motivation to take care of business if everything is provided to you with nothing expected in return. The insane commies in this country would have you believe that this arrangment will result in the recipient of freebies giving you back their very best in gratitude for the generosity  It's as if they never learned anything of human nature in their lifetime on this planet..

Oh, maybe education and healthcare was a good investment. |

Maybe before we invest in other countries, we should try and solve our own problems. What country was giving America handouts after the revolutionary war? The reason America became the greatest country in the world is because the people had to work for things and earn their way. Now with all the welfare leaches, we are sliding backwards rapidly. If Nepal had been forced to stand on it's own sooner, They could possibly be even further along then they are now and investing in their own education and healthcare. |
