I have an issue with my 20 year old Carrier Weathermaker 9200 furnace. The blowback circuit keeps popping.
I called a customer of mine, he comes out, says he smelled gas in the house, does a quick check of the furnace and tells me I need a new one because the heat exchanger is rusty and bad.
I look at it, there is a tiny amount of rust on the very bottom of it. He didn't want to even reassemble it. I told him to do so and check for carbon monoxide. He reluctantly does this and his meter shows 0 with an occasional blip up to 1.
I had an old carbon monoxide alarm in the house, it never went off, I bought a new one, same thing.
This guy wants about $6k to install a new uint in my 1,400 sq ft house.

I smell a rat... Am I mistaken?

Should be less than 2500 installed unless you get super high end models

Thanks, That's what I was thinking too.
Is it possible to just replace a heat exchanger?

0-10 ppm. =normal
11 and up inside would be reason to investigate cause
Reads up to 5 ppm. outside is not uncommon.

You would get charged alot to do that. It would be better to replace the whole furnace. I would get some other quotes.

I have another guy here for a second opinion.
He says the same, but his price installed is around 3k.

Is there a big difference in price/quality between Carrier and Lennox?

Those carrier furnaces are notorious for plugged or cracked heat exchangers. Even if it's not bad yet, you should really consider replacing it anyway. Also, if $6500 is just for a new furnace installed, find someone else to do it.

Lennox dealer was out here last week to replace a seized fan..

He quoted me $14K installed for a complete heater & A/C replacement. I politely declined.

I am sure that someone will disagree with me, but i dont think there is. I installed both of them as a HVAC tech, but that was ten years ago. They are both good systems as long as you have local dealers that are qualified to work on them.

Carrier & Lennox are both parent companies that own other lesser names.

A "bad" or "rusted" HX is the single biggest and most common scam out there.

Here's what I tell customers my opinion is. The blower or scorched air side that heats the house is positive pressure. Lots. The inducer or natural draft process for the combustion side of things is very low pressure or even negative pressure. If there was a compromise in the HX the pressure of the blower would push air into the combustion side and affect my combustion and draft readings. Also, CO likely wouldn't go into the living space since its pushing air into combustion side. Nonetheless, it needs to go if actually compromised.

Visual inspection from above, below, and with a camera. You can see the cracks and voids. Typically at seams or where flames have touched it or it over heated from lack of air flow.

I did look at the hx this morning with the second opinion guy. It has issues but at least the CO is only an issue on the combustion side.
So far the quotes installed for a 1400 sf house are $3,500 for carrier and $4,700 for lennox

Pretty close, lowest I found was $2800 installed. Sold!
Much better than the initial quote.
