Thanks. I’ve been looking for something that costs more than a top-tier A.R. 15, but that is also inferior in every objective way to an entry-level A.R. 15.

I'm sure someone will make a 922r parts kit so that enough domestic parts will be available to convert it to a legally configured G36ish rifle.

However, as others have pointed out it will be insanely expensive and yet there will be no shortage of HK fans who will do it.

It's funny, this same test was touted back around 2004 ish. I've seen a G36C owned by an old member here (larryg36) that had melted bad enough its barrel couldnt be removed. It ran, but if it got that hot I'm sure its accuracy was absolute shit... though back then most of us weren't shooting his mgs for accuracy tho lol

Also, consider the timing and how few remaining buyers of the g36 are out there...

Barrel could be threaded and the thumbhole stock isn't terrible, but the way they approached the low-cap magazine is such a horror show.  Totally kills it for me.  I won't buy a semi-auto rifle with an artificially restricted capacity like that.

I suppose the SL8-6 already has German gov export approval and ATF import approval so it's less of a risk to bring it back.  That said, when HK sent out that long gun survey last year, I'm sure no one wanted the cluster that the SL8 is.

Hopefully it's a harbinger of things to come, and we get a US/German combo SL8-Awesome in the future that's a G36 clone.  I doubt it, but one can hope.

But its HK and probably very limited availability so expect to pay $2k or more street price

Yeah I was expecting well north of $2,000 before I saw the price on HK's website.

I just checked GB and people are already bidding them over MSRP

I'll wait until the regular dealers have them in stock for under MSRP.

That's just the excuse HK likes to parrot in order to give the most minimal effort into actually bringing in something worth while.
Every importer from century arms to FN has figured out how to bring in the desired items. lol

Now I think it begs the question...

Why the fuck is a gucci AR-18 platform gun from HK of all people at $1,699 while the 9mm subgun from the 60s has an MSRP over $2,000.

Oh I forgot... it's HK

Obvi it’s not a real 36, but I’ve always thought the SL8 was a neat looking rifle, especially for having to be so feature-neutered.

How about they stop introducing irrelevant shit that could have been made during the AWB, and focus on producing enough SP5s to meet demand? I swear, it's like the marketing guys  at Colt and HK are constantly trying to one up each other on who can do the stupidest shit.

I would buy the fuck out of a G36 or variant for $1700.

But not a AWB era SL8 that I have to spend another grand or two to make not suck.

Like, you do the SP5 and SP5K but can't sell a decent G36?

It's supposedly firearm specific and takes a long time.  Looks like HK applied for G36 civilian export in 2013 and was finally able to do it in 2020.  Now it definitely seems to be US laws that are stopping them.

"In November 2013, Heckler & Koch applied for permission from the German Government to sell a new civilian-legal version of the G36. Called the HK243 in Europe and the HK293 in America, it is more similar to the G36 assault rifle than previous civilian models. The main difference is the bolt is redesigned to not allow a conversion to fully automatic fire. It has quad picatinny rails and accepts STANAG magazines. Four different barrel lengths from 230 mm (9.1 in) to 480 mm (19 in) and four stock models (short fixed, long fixed and two adjustable) will be offered.[39]

In November 2020, G36 rifles became available for sale on the civilian market in Canada. They were sold with match grade barrels by Lothar Walther for CAD $5,999, or with an H&K barrel for CAD $7,998.[40][4"

I had a early SL8. Trigger sucked but the thing was a tack driver. Got some seriously good groups out of it.
Bolt hold open stopped working so HK sent a redesigned catch that engaged the receiver with more surface area. It ended up cracking the plastic and it stopped holding bolt open again. HK said tough luck and wouldn't fix it.  Sold it to some dude that was converting it to a G36 so he didn't care about the crack.

There’s a few videos on youtube regarding destructive testing by magdumping an M4 and M4A1 to failure. 500-some rounds for the M4 to blow out the barrel, and 900-some for the M4A1 to melt the gas tube.

M4 vs. M4a1 carbine; destructive testing

The G36’s problem is that after 100~150 rounds, you end up chasing your zero due to the barrel trunion heating up and shifting your barrel. Then it shifts again as it cools down.

HK was supposed to fix that years ago, but the german army never wanted to pay for it, IIRC.

I owned an SL8 for a while in the 2000s.

Its a nice shooter but the single stack mag made me sell it on consignment. Also the polymer lower was developing a nice crack. Nice idea but with the single stack mag its not for me.

Now if they did a semiauto faithful clone of the G36 double stack mag, pistol grip and all, with no PC nonsense, I would be on board. They could produce it in their GA plant to avoid 922r.

But H&K won't do that,
because we suck and they hate us.

Unfortunately in CA it’s not featureless. Thumbhole stocks are way to assaulty for Californians to be trusted with.

Now if you buy a real G36 stock on it and bolted some kydex behind the pistol grip, that would be a safe, non-assaulty gun thing.
