Whats your say on this vise I found locally on CL. Never bought a vise, hence the needed input. Its a Morgan Chicago Model #140. Seller (who seems a bit short on info in emails) agreed on a price of $70. Should I fo?

FO hard.  I'd buy that for $70-100 all day long

$70 is a solid deal, although that brand is not as sought after as Wilson or Columbian. Still going to be a better vise than anything imported from China.

That's a steal as long as there are no cracks. I'm always nervous about vises that have been repainted because the paint can cover cracks pretty easily.

Talked to the seller over the phone, said everything is fine and in good working condition. Supposed to meet up soon. Ill be sure to check for cracks and whatnot.

ETA: Also had a Columbia and a Reed for sale. All look like they were repainted.

Looks like a twin to my American Red Seal, you should jump on it for that price. That would cost $600 nowadays new

Since its the topic...if someone needed a new one for building 80%... what's a good starting vice?

Oh, I thought you said vice.

I prefer GD's favorites:  hookers and blow.

Met up with the CL seller and picked up the vise for $70. Asked if he refinished it and he said that a 'friend' of his refinishes old vises. Looked clean, swiveled smoothly, and jaws easily moved and help firm on a clamped item. Added awesome potato pics from my semi lighted garage.

Nice vise and well worth the money. However it looks like the seller painted it by pouring the paint on top and letting it run down. Some sanding/brushing and a repaint will make it awesome.

Yep.  If made in America, jump on it.

I just bought a Columbian 504 M-2 this week for $40. I have probably 4 hours into disassembly, paint stripping and repainting.

I went with Rust-Oleum Hammered Gray, but I will soon be switching to Rust-Oleum Hammered Verde Green. The only problem with Verde Green is finding it in stores. The only option I have found is ordering the 6 can minimum from Home Depot for ~$36.

Yea Im not thrilled about the paint job on it, however Ive never done something even close to dissembling a vise and refinishing it. Ill bolt it down now so I can use it for a few projects and do some research on how to clean it up in the spring.

They're not hard. I put a paint remover (the orange citrus brand) on it and let it do most of the work. After that it was a wire wheel on a drill.

I wouldn't worry about the paint...I mean it's a vice after all. It's not a dildo.
