I need a handheld GSP with capability of uploading custom GIS maps and downloading way point data. I already have a Garmin Nuvi for navigation on roads and we have a Trimble GeoXT at work. I am looking for a smaller unit that I can use for personal off-road/ hiking and some data collection while working. I spend a lot of time at work trying to find items IDed on a GIS map. If I could upload a georeferenced GIS map and navigate it would be great.
Any suggestions? |

Delorme PN-40 matches that requirement. There's a program called Xmap for making custom maps. The unit stock comes with Topo USA 8. Yes, I agree. I manage the geospatial department at my work, and am a GISP. We have Tribmles (I evaled a Yuma recently) and run Arc/Info and ArcGIS. I wanted a similar device and the DeLormes (w/ Xmap) seem to be one of the the least expensive/best ways to get GIS data on a recreational device. I will say that I'm not keen on the PN-20 however (mine is for sale) so hopefully the PN-40 resolves the problems with the 20. Unless you just want to load ArcPad up on a Windows Mobile device... |

I got my PN-40 for $199 on Black Friday from Amazon.com - nice sale. That's a sweet deal. OP, note that Xmap is not cheap and you will probably want the ESRI ArcGIS extension to achieve the desired level of interoperability between your ESRI and DeLorme data. |
