Small ones, like fit in a suitcase. Does GD have any recommendations?

Preferably cheaper and without service contracts. Just like s little insurance policy if something goes "missing"

We are moving cross country, going to have a trailer. May contain NFA. In case we wake up, walk outside and do not see trailer...

Any tracker that has a range greater than 100feet or so will need a service plan.

Make sure you back the trailer up against a wall, and possibly in a corner so you can jack-knife it.

Or take the NFA stuff into the hotel room maybe....

I was thinking something like this but would have a 12v battery running a lighter plug usb charger to run the phone.
use one of your phones and eliminate the cost.  maybe one of you can be without a phone for the trip.

This, but also put a padlocked chain or cable through the trailer wheels.  Just dont forget it is there in the morning and drive off without removing it.

The dewalt branded ones are surprisingly decent.  Builders around here use them and I've had a couple successful recoveries with them.  Lots of options like geo fencing and motion activation.  Accurate tracks and frequent updates.

GPS Tracker

I have 2 of these working right now. There is a $25 per unit per month service but it is not a contract. Use it for one month if you want and never again or in a year you can turn it on for another month. Get the magnetic waterproof case too, they work well.

Study a few days and get your ham radio license.
Then get one of these:

Tracker

Global tracking for free as long as it is within range of a digapeter.
Most fair size cities have great coverage.
