I am looking to get a GPS unit for use in my auto, as well as on trails/hiking/camping.  Anyone have suggested units that they use?  I'm looking at a Garmin eTrex right now.  I'm trying to keep the cost under 400 bucks total for the unit and the auto accesories but i'll take any suggestions.  Thanks for the help!

I really like my Garmin 76 CSx.

I have a Garmin 60CSX and love it. Have only had it for about 6 months but it is an awesome navigational tool. You should be able to find it in your price range if you look around.

Pick a Garmin, whichever meets your budget / needs.

The Garmin eTrex Vista HCx has one of the best antenas on the market now. It also accepts a micro SD chip that you can load up with 2 gigs of maps. That's a lot of maps.

$400 will buy a lot of etrex.  I'd recommend them, owning one myself.

I'd recommend a Garmin Etrex Legend Cx, or their newest version, the HCx with the improved antenna.

I've got the Vista Cx, which is like the Legend but with a built in magnetic Compass and barometer as well.

I love it, but if I did it again I'd just get the Legend HCx, as if you are moving you already get a good projected compass based on your last location.  And the barometer in the Vista is neat, but I almost never use it.

As you know, you have to spend another $100 on Map software, and another $60-$70 on a 2 gig card to store all the maps, to make the GPS really be full featured.

My Cx, with the older antenna, already does pretty good in the woods, but the HCx model is supposedly improved even more.

I have the Vista CX and I love it.

I would like to have the City Navigator maps as an add on, but the base map has been pretty good for my travels across the country.

Garmin 60CSX

Just another informed purchase made with the help of ARFCOM wisdom.  It is a great unit and accessories are widely available.

Right now Garmin has a $50 rebate on the 60CSX and the 60CX.

Another good deal is the 2610 ($190) from edge gps. The software (~$130 by itself) can be updated to the latest version from Garmin.

The 2610 isn't a trail/hiking/camping gps but is much better for the car. The 60CSX is better for trails but you'll likely want to purchase the map software.
