I am looking at a German Shepard Pup that is about 5 months old.

Is 5 months too late to make a big impression on him and train him well?

Also his ears are still pretty floppy. Will they eventually stand up when he gets bigger?

I've never had a GSD and have wantd one for quite a long time.

5 is not to young. You and family can still bond. Ears are a tuff call. They have mind of their own. I have two, plus a bull dog who thinks he is one two. good luck.     LDES

I have 2.5 gsd. A long haired female, a short haired male, and a 100# husky/shepherd mix (think white german shepherd with husky tail and blue eyes). They are all extremely intelligent. I do believe GSD are rated as one of the top 10 smartest dogs. You can't go wrong with one..

As stated previously, 5 months is a great age for them to learn and the ears are a tough call. If it is purebred, they should have stood up by now but there can always be variances.

Depends on the upbringing so far.  As long as there has been no abuse, you should be good to go.  I would definitely look it over very very well first to see what type of temperment he/she has.  That will be the most important factor no matter the age.

Not sure about the ears.  We bought ours at 14 weeks and his ears were up already.  Might want to do a little research on that.  Take a look at both parents.  That's a very good indication of what the dog will look like.

My first was 8 months old when I got him. "Moose" He was pretty wild and malnourished when we got him but we worked a lot with him and he has mellowed over the years.

He got bigger

Then we got Dixie

and she got bigger

They are very smart and very protective. Moose was the worst, he is/was very aggressive toward strangers.

My father loves him to death but learned not stick his hand in the truck window when Moose is in there.

Obedience school is your friend. Even a simple course.

The ears will soon straighten out.

As for the ears, sometimes the don't go up.

This big guy only had one stand.

He is a "King" Shepherd. If his ears don't stand up it will really ruin the look of him being a GSD. His father is solid black long hair and his mother is long haired and sable (saddle back?)

Moose's ears had been infected so much they never stood up. Dixie had one flopper until she was about 6 months old when it finally popped.

I wonder if a GSD pup would get along with my 5 year old lab female, she needs a buddy.

Yes, GSDs are generally very smart and 'active', they need a playmate or three.

5 months isn't too late at all ... just be steady and consistent, and he'll pick up anything you want to teach.

His ears should have popped up by 5 months .. I'd glue the inside edges of his ears to one another with
Bish's Tear Mender, after 3-4 weeks they'll separate on their own as his fur grows out.    If you wait too long,
chances are they'll never stay up.

If you get a male they would be great buds.

The reason I got Dixie was because we didn't want to leave Moose alone when we put down Bear, our female black lab.

I love this pic.

            It's getting dusty in here.
