How hard is it. Mine is making a loud continous noise after the little woman put ice in it. Like a rumble sound.

Not hard.

I'd check the inside with a flashlight 1st. Ice is good for keeping the blades inside honed, I heard.

Are these things common in the states? I see them on TV a lot, but i cant recall ever seeing one in Australia. We just throw stuff in the bin.

Check the blades to see if they are free to swing.  Sometimes a large chunk of stuff will knock one over and jam to the side instead of freely swinging.   The noise you are hearing may simply be vibration from being out of balance due to a jammed cutter out of position.

No big deal. Ice shouldn't of hurt it though I guess if it were on it's last leg it could. I throw chicken bones down mine.

If you buy a new one by the same manufacturer it will probably slip right on without even having to change the drain flange.

If not, it still won't be all that difficult.

All of the above.  The only problem I had was that the idiot installer sealed the flange with silicone rather than plumber's putty,  and it was a royal bitch to get it to break loose.  I was starting to think I'd have to get a new sink but it finally popped out with much leverage and appropriate language.

Just be sure to remove the knock-out for the dishwasher connection if you have a dishwasher.

Be sure you have enough wire length also.  You should have fresh copper exposed for the connections.

funny that you mention the disposal.  wife broke a cup in the sink and thought she got it all.  i go to use it and sounds like there are possums in there screaming.  it felt like i was playing operation with a pair of scissors and a flashlight trying to pick up the broken glass in it.

you could probably search youtube for a video of a disposal replacement.
