I'm using Garmin Mapsource and I am unable to load maps to my Etrex Legend C for the area around Ft. Lauderdale, Fl and the Miami, Fl area.

I can load every other map around them, but not those.  Is that the case for anyone else?

I do have the latest release according to the Garmin updater program.

I've got plenty of avail. memory in my Etrex.  The software won't let me select those areas of the map.

Just fishing here...are you loading the topographic map series or the city guide dvd?   The city guide dvd has to be unlocked to use.

ETA: Seeing you are loading the topo, I'll give that a try myself.  I don't have the streets version,  but haven't found that to be that big a disadvantage.  Major roads are still named, side streets are all displayed, but simply called "Road"  The big advantage of the city guide is it has local knowledge of bars, stores, restaurants, gas stations...but I didn't want to spring the big bucks for it.

oops... yep, running the TOPO version.

(on a side note, is the street version stuff worth it ?)

I also discovered that (totaly unrelated to the above problem) my GPS displays an altitude in excess of 65k feet

when I do the calibration, it shows that the GPS altitude is around 5400 feet, which is VERY close.  I wonder why it shows an excessive altitude for the normal display ?

Wow!   Pretty thin air at that altitude.

That's suspiciously off by a factor of ten.  When you did the calibration did you by chance "type" in an extra zero?

What I do to calibrate is get somewhere geographically at a known elevation  -- for instance the street in front of my house is at 525 feet, so sitting in my truck add another 5 feet and override whatever altitude is being displayed and save.

If you're doing the same,  possibly the "barometer setting"  is way off?  (by a factor of ten)

Calibrate that too.

...or if all else fails Garmin tech support has responded to me within a day by e-mail.

It also could be a bona-fide hardware failure.  The altimeter/barometer  is using an actual aneroid capsule (and here I'm guessing ,  it's pushing on a strain gage or pizoeletric element) and the capsule could have lost it's vacuum.

I use the Mapsource program in my Garmin iQue3600 PDA type GPS and it works PERFECT for me. I only use it for the road maps in my car. I have the ENTIRE USA/Canada (including ALL of FL) loaded on a 2Gig SD memory card with no problems at all. I've never really paid much attention to the Altitude though

trip home showed the correct altitude

I also note that it can't pick a very good route to a waypoint, even 100 feet away it had me "starting" at a highway about 5 miles away

Same GPS here no issues with the map. Altitude is spot on compared to USGS topo maps and the velocity indicator is pretty close to my speedometer. With battery saver my distance is +- 20 feet.

OT but I wasn't aware the iQue 3600 would take more than a 1GB card??

Red_5, the reason it picks such a poor route is because the GPS is using the base map for the route calculation.  Mapsource Topo does not have the ability to auto route.

I hadn't heard that but thought I'd try a 2 GB for $40. It took about an hour and a half to upload all the maps but it all works great!

I'm  certain Mapsource Metroguide USA 3.0 and below will autoroute.  I know Metroguide North America V6 doesn't.

I do not have any of the newer software from Garmin, ie the City Select and City Navigator.  They do autoroute.

I remember seeing a web page quite a while ago that had all of Garmins software listed and stated which had auto routing for the GPS.  However, after searching for a while I can't find it.  Perhaps you'll have better luck.

Map Source has a great working Auto Routing feature. With the voice Guidance it takes you literally to the door of the address you type in. I'm in outside sales and use it regularly to get to customers in areas I've never been to before. It beats the hell out of the 1/2 dozen maps and Map Quest print-offs I used to use. It is Definitely NOT cheap at $150, but really worth it if you use your unit much. I can literally fly to any place in the CONUS and Canada, and have full mapping and local attractions (restaurants, bars, hotels etc...) details.

Well I took the plunge and got the latest NA streets DVD, pretty damn pricey.
auto routing now works :)
lots more streets than the TOPO version too :)

still havent resolved the topo issue for Ft Lauderdale and Miami (not that it really matters now with this new mapset)

Thanks to all for your input
