I like the ones where he plays Sam Rockwell playing whatever role.

Some roles are made for specific actors, he's an actor that plays specific roles...........well.

Sid Vicious and Winston Churchill are his best IMO. When I think of those people now I think of the character he plays not the real person. And I was well familiar with both, before the movies.
AND they are at opposite ends of his career! AND they are as different as two people can be! Zorg is probably the most fun. |

Someone said earlier he 'melts' into a character. That's the difference. I love Daniel Day Lewis and Jude Law, and Pacino, Brando, DeCaprio, Hoffman, et al. But you can 'see' them playing their role. Oldman really does disappear. I would say his voice is the only distinguishing tell, but then you watch Churchill and he IS Churchill.
He never really stood out in my mind for years as the greatest actor. But that's because he's not 'dramatic'. He does drama as a career without sticking out. That's why in this thread everyone says, "Forgot that was him, or - that was him?" He's one of a kind. |

Quoted: Wrongo Winston Churchill, a court years ago. HE was amazing. View Quote Its hard to say what was his best role, because he nails it every single time. I'm going with Churchill though. |

Quoted: I think I've only seen a fraction of his movies but of what I've seen Dracula is my favorite. View Quote That role still ranks as my favorite. It's acting, sure, but his mannerism with the sword, and licking the razor blade all went straight to the heart of a complicated role: man, warrior, monster. |

Quoted: The guys a chameleon. I doubt that I could narrow it down to one character View Quote Jack Nicholson is another one. I remember watching "Hoffa" and realizing about 30 minutes in that Jack was the lead part. Movies are about our suspension of disbelief. If an actor can dissolve himself into the role so that he 'becomes' the character, it completes the illusion. Meanwhile, so many actors just play themselves over and over, regardless of the role (cough-cough "Jack Sparrow"). |

I loved him in Romeo is Bleeding. I think of it as the backstory to his role in The Professional.
He makes any/every role memorable. My favorite actor. |

He's a great actor. One who becomes the character, rather than oh look it's XXX XXX playing a Cowboy, or whatever.
And like others, half the movies he's in I didn't realize it was him till the credits. And yeah, professional is a great one. I like that he's a bit Over The Top in it, cause it shows how those people can be that crazy and 'obvious' in real life, yet no one seems to do anything about it. And that movie was made 30 years ago! (I saw it in the theater, wow I'm getting old!) |
