Wednesday Oct 28 is the 50th anniversary of the completion of the St Louis Gateway Arch.

A few days from completion I took these photos while on a trip to St. Louis as a member of the University of Illinois varsity Rifle Team. We had a competitive meet with the Washington University team. When a lot of schools still had such teams. Fifty year old black and white photos a little faded.

Very cool!  Took the kids up in it a couple years ago.  Always a neat experience.

That white arch is a racist symbol of oppression.

I remember going to St. Louis as a kid and watching the video of the construction.  They had to meet in the middle of the 630' and if either section was a fraction of an inch off, it meant failure.

Thank you OP.

pretty cool.  That's back when St. Louis was a nice city, right?

I've seen it a few times while passing by, next time I will make the time to check it out. Assuming I won't be murdered in a riot or whatever is going on now.

My signature along with other school children of the St. Louis area is supposed to be in a time capsule encased in the footing of the arch.  I remember signing it but have no idea if its really there.

And yes it is cool to go to the top.  You can feel it sway in a strong wind!

As a kid I watched it go up. Over the years it went up from the bulldozed rubble of a river front slum. Those were such optimistic days..... new highways, stadium, and downtown revitalization. It used to be fun to go down and see it all.

Cool.

My Dad has a picture of himself while working on the original Busch Stadium in 1965. The Arch is right behind him in the background with the missing last piece. He was a carpenter on that job. He knew a few iron workers who worked on the Arch.

A year later he was a combat medic in Vietnam with the 11th ACR.

He's still with us. The old Busch Stadium of course isn't.
