Okay. I was digging through my gear again for the 20th time looking for something specific and found all kinds of stuff.
Usually, I get things I like and have them on my office desk for a few weeks and then suddenly my wife makes them disappear into the storage room in some tub or bag that she finds readily available (usually the bag I set out for my next job). I am getting ready to eliminate unnecessary items in one fell swoop if I can keep them in one spot long enough to gather all of it together. I was tossing items on the floor and looked down and saw this as a whole set up without intending it.

Funny enough I was thinking about sort of the same thing this morning.
If you had a SHTF vest, which vest setup would it be? Something that caters for all your weapons' ammo or just a rifle rig etc. etc. Example: I'm thinking of the Blackhawk Phalanx HSV. Why? Not that I'm particularly parcial to Blackhawk but since I don't have a MOLLE vest yet with this vest I can carry ammo for my primary weapon (Vektor LM5), secondary weapon (Beretta 92FS) and the supporting weapon (Remington 870). Yes, it doesn't carry a holster for any of those weapons but if I slap on the weapons I have one vest to grab and I can feed all of them for a little while. Your thoughts? |

I would choose one long gun and carry more ammo for it. I really can't see an advantage in lugging around a spare long gun for the minimal use it would get. One primary, one secondary. Supporting weapons need to be in the hands of supporting people. Otherwise they are a burden. A shotgun is a devastating and useful weapon, but it is entirely situational as to when you will use it. If you are holding up one spot, then a shotgun would be fine to have around, but as far as walking yourself from location to location, more gear is more weight is more burden. That's my 2 cents though, I'm sure other people have more ideas than I do. |

Would you go with a vest that only has primary weapon mag pouches? Or something that has a cross draw for the secondary weapon on it? Or would you go like I'm thining on a vest that would cater for most everything? That go-to vest if you only had a couple of minutes to bug out. |

One for AK mags and one for AR mags. Both are set up similarly, but I always keep the pistol and three mags for it on the vest. I don't particularly like crossdraw though for two reasons. First is that the left side of the vest is where I like to position more magazines, so I can draw them with my left hand when the rifle is on my right side. Secondly is that if I do need to draw the pistol, and the rifle is still on it's sling, then a crossdraw would be an awkward reach around the rifle. With the pistol positioned high on the right side, when I need to transition I just hold the rifle with my support hand and draw the pistol. With the rifle hanging on the sling I can still access the pistol without having to move my arms over or around the rifle to get to it. |

Well I just never liked the look of the cross draw vests. Hence I never gave it much thought. But now that you mention the pratical limitations of it as well that's totally out then.
So I guess I'll stick with getting the Blackhawk Phalanx Vest then. With that I can carry 4 primary weapon mags, 2 secondary mags, flash light and 14 rounds of shotgun ammo. It's like a all in one feeder. :) |
