Is it any good.
I need some new entertainment. Thought I might buy it. Also thinking about John Adams |
|
It is superb, as is John Adams. I'd buy Generation Kill, and rent / stream John Adams. John Adams is a bit slow at times, but it was very well done other than the pacing. Acting was superb by the lead (can't remember name a the moment, off to google). Generation Kill is one to own...you can watch it over and over again and still be entertained. It has some decent commentaries as well if you are into them. |

Generation Kill is awesome. I bought it for a marine buddy of mine for Christmas. Wal Mart has it for $15.00.I find that it portrays what it was like during the 1st days of OIF. I was in the 3/7 Cav and experienced the same bullshit that these MArines did. Problems with supply, misinformation about WMDs, incompetent leaders, faulty equipment, etc.
You will not be disappointed. I have watched it dozens of times and it is brillant |

Generation Kill I thought this thread was going to be about the under 30 kids who were brought up on video game killing simulators. It is... the ones who became Force Reconissance Marines. |

Quoted: damn good series. and get all the book, and Nathanial Flicks book as well. there is another documentary about the Iraqi invasion, and it talks about the same things as generation kill, but I can not recall the name. It was a video from a buddy in my unit |
|
Just got back from Walmart, I went out and bought the 3 dvd set. Had wanted to watch it for a while, but couldn't remember the name. All I knew was that Alex Skaarsgard (the S.O. is a HUGE fan) starred in it, and it was about Marines fighting in Iraq. So, thanks to the OP for starting this thread.

Generation Kill I thought this thread was going to be about the under 30 kids who were brought up on video game killing simulators. It's also a band name. I believe they were founded by the former singer of Exodus. They actually have a few good songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2l0eZXKJl0 I saw the series, and thought it was pretty good, but nothing to rave about. It drags at times, kinda like real life in the Corps, so I suppose that adds to the realism? |
| It is the most realistic portrayal of the Marine Corp and specifically the infantry. Some people that watched it with me thought that the dialogue was too over the top but I told them that was how we all spoke, infantry Marines are a different breed all together. |
| The mustache issue is one of those interesting tid bits that most Marines may never got told about. Prior to the kick off, we were told by Gen Mattis that Iraqis were buying Marine uniforms online, so he directed the 1st Marine Division to all grow mustaches, it would be an IFF item because a day or two in the march up we were to shave them off. |

I got the impression, based on what the guy (can't think of his rank - first sgt?) said in the last episode - that clamping down on the grooming standards was a way for him to keep his subordinates focused on something other than boredom and misery. |

Screw it. I'm watching this tonight. From the book: Corporal Josh Ray Person (reading letters from US schoolkids): Dear Frederick, thank you for your nice letter, but I am actually a US Marine who was born to kill whereas clearly you have mistaken me for some sort of wine-sipping Communist dick-suck. And although peace probably appeals to tree-loving bisexuals like you and your parents, I happen to be a death-dealing, blood-crazed warrior who wakes up every day just hoping for the chance to dismember my enemies and defile their civilizations. Peace sucks a hairy asshole, Freddy. War is the motherfucking answer. spf |

Quoted: I'm curious to hear the backstory on that. Quoted: Quoted: Also, to anyone that's seen it before, if you re-watch it, view it from the perspective of the unit getting tasked to keep them out of the way... I'm curious to hear the backstory on that. It was always my guess that they had become so over specialized, that they no longer possessed basic Infantry skills. Might be true, might not be, but I know the whole time out Bn was prepping for the invasion, that recon unit never trained with us. Also, some of what is portrayed in the show, I think is stuff my unit did (1/4). But I can't be too sure, because everything was so rinse wash repeat over there that everyone came out with really similar stories. |
