In light of this day, and of a thread I just read, I wonder what ARFCOM has done to help out those who are in need this Christmas season. I've seen plenty of "What did you get" type threads... but what have you given? Let's hear it!
I'll start. I donated money to the Salvation Army, and went out and purchased a bunch of food to donate for a local group who helps feed families in need. On top of a huge donation to St. Jude's a few weeks back. Go!!! |

Not everyone advertises what they do. It's enough that they do it. Random acts of kindness are Random. Understood, believe me. I usually go the random route myself, but sheer curiosity prompted my question. That, and the "what did you get" threads were getting old. Thought I'd go a different route. Good deeds for others are wonderful, expressed or not. |

We went to a local CRAZY lights house, synchronized lights, broadcasts on FM. Everyone drives and parks there to watch the magic. They were also collecting for Children's Hospital, and we all dug for all our 1's and gave 'em $14. Also, yesterday at three places I shopped I asked the clerk what was their favorite candy bar and bought 'em one. Also gave a gift card to Applebee's to a nice lady in line I was chatting with. I also NEVER pass a kettle without tossing in money. How dare a body go shopping and not put in the kettle? I really do think it curses ya. |

I usually go the random route myself, but sheer curiosity prompted my question. That, and the "what did you get" threads were getting old. Thought I'd go a different route. Good deeds for others are wonderful, expressed or not. This is true, those threads get old. Here's one: We participate in a 'Christmas Angels' program at my mother's church every year. One of the family's we picked was a single mom with two kids, a 13 year old girl and a 10 year old boy. Mom was divorced, worked at a low end job. She asked for a "Real Christmas dinner for her kids". The 13 year old girl asked for "a bra so she wouldn't be embarrassed to go to school" She didn't want to ask her Mom because her Mom worked so hard to give them what they had. The boy asked for a pair of tennis shoes so he could go and play with his friends outside after school. All he had was shoes for school. Now, you can debate all day about parents, or responsibilities, but I defy anyone who has an ounce of compassion in thier soul to not be moved by this. We met those people, and thier story and circumstances are real. My wife and I took care of thier needs, and have not regretted a dime of that. |

In addition to our regular weekly offering, we made our annual Christmas donation to church. I won't mention numbers, but it was a pretty decent amount. We've been able to do this for the last few years. This year we started something new as well. We asked our Minister for the Christmas "wish list" from a family in our congregation that could use some help. He got us a list for the two daughters in a family, the youngest of which is developmentally disabled. I think that they were hoping to get one or two of the items from the list for each of the kids. We bought everything on it and then some (they really weren't asking for much and a lot of what they wanted was educational oriented). They don't know who we are, and we don't know who they are. Only our Minister knows both families and we asked him not to tell. My wife and I had a blast shopping for these two little girls (it was the first time I had been in a Toys R Us in probably ten years). It was a good feeling. |
