Paramount released a few short teasers for the movie, out March 31, 2017. I'm starting to feel good about it!

Well, was hoping for a MATEBA autorevolver...

ScarJo really captured the vacuous "porcelain doll" look of the Major from the original movie, her acting skills are amazing.

Really curious what they will use for subject matter since the originals were a critique of Japanese society and government that really don't translate well to anything Americans not familiar with the culture are likely to understand.

I think she's a PERFECT fit. I know some social justice warriors got all butthurt because they didn't use an Asian in a movie based on a comic book in japan but she fits perfectly. Almost every character in a Japanese cartoon looks/is Caucasian anyways, anyone who says no is drowning in a river in Egypt.

Why?

The Japanese don't draw any of their Anime looking like Japanese people, so why should they cast a Japanese or Asian person in a live-action movie adaptation?

I've had many discussions with my fiancee' over this, as she is a fan of GOITS: Stand alone complex.

Scarlett Johansson was a good choice, she'll resonate with a lot of potential male theathergoers. Why? A) She's hot and B) she's a household name.

I love how people are assuming I prefer an Asian just because Scarlett Johansson (notice how I didn't say a white/caucasian/etc. actress?) doesn't sit right with me.

Its the same deal with actors that play Batman. You don't really see that actor as being able to pull off the role. Its a roll of the dice until you can actually sit down and watch the movie.

Will she end up a George Clooney or do it right like Christian Bale?

Loved the '95 movie.  I never really did watch any of the later stuff.  I need to try again.  All I could find was an English dub version, and it didn't sit well with me, even though they used the same English voice actors for the Chief and Batou, which I really liked.

But everyone else sounded wrong, and the Major looked wrong.  I couldn't watch anymore after the high-pitched rolling robot things in the second episode made me want to hammer Q-tips into my ears.

Most of it has to do with losing the concept of self in a post-industrial isolationist society... not really something that makes sense to a self-oriented society like America.

Suicide, childlessness, plummeting birth rates are all very Japanese topics... they even had a story arc that referenced the Yukio Mishima coup/suicide.

Ultimately it's a dystopian story, but not about fighting the system, but a system that fights to maintain the status quo of a nation that allowed it to happen--not because of security and Patriot Act nonsense, but rather the passivity and tolerance of graft to save face and honor the Japanese are so fond of... with individuals, hackers, soldiers rebelling against this society, only to be put down by Motoko and her ragtag bunch of assassins.

Most of the time the Major has a flat affect and expository monotone delivery like she's got freaking Asperger's. Either in the Japanese or the English dubs.

I suppose Melanie Griffith would be a fit, but I think she's probably too old.

There is also the fact that the Major has a full body prosthetic; the only part of her that is original is her brain. She can look like whatever she wants, including a white woman.

I just hope it actually takes place in Japan.

She is dumb enough to parlay those tits and lips into hundreds of millions of dollars.

That said I still don't like her in this role, hopefully my worries will be unfounded and it'll be a great movie.

There's lots of really unique stories you can tell with the sorts of technology that are present in the GiTS world. Full body prosthesis, ghost hacking, ghost copying, etc. It's really limited by Hollywood's creativity and risk aversion, which are both dismal.

For instance, I recall a storyline from the manga where the Major is investigating a slave/prostitution ring where a bunch of orphans are having their ghosts repeatedly copied and hacked (giving them brain damage in the process), and then having the copies uploaded to bimboesque bodies and sold as sex slaves.

That's a little too 'out there' for Hollywood. They wouldn't want to risk the controversy a story like that would cause. The central theme of GiTS is questioning what it means to be human, through devices like memory editing, cybernetics, etc. These topics innately make people uncomfortable - in a good way in my opinion, as it provokes thought. However, making your audience uneasy or uncomfortable is risky, and Hollywood HATES risk. They'd rather remake a hundred old movies for a meager but safe return than risk one new and audacious project for a high but risky return.

So what I expect out of this movie is a few special effects like plug holes in the back of the neck, and maybe some skin being scratched away to show plastic underneath, but nothing that really makes you question in your mind that someone is flesh and blood. ScarJo will show a bit of flesh, but not enough to get an R rating, and certainly not enough to convey the Major's attitude towards nudity. And for plot I expect a basic "we're the good guys who save the world from a big bomb/virus/whatever". Boring basic shit that won't cause any controversy and is sure to get a safe return on investment.

Hollywood doesn't hate risk but you can get away with a lot of more stuff in print then you can on a movie screen.

I'm no fan of Hollywood but the topics covered in the America movie industry go a lot more in depth and with greater meaning then 90% of the stuff churned out by other countries. Again, your comparing literal dime store novels (manga) to big budget films. Compared to other nations, the US takes a lot of risk. For example you will never see movies regarding minority rights, slavery, conspiracy or government corruption come out of Japan, India or China. Hell no, its not going to happen...not in this life or the left.

There are some pretty alien concepts in the series. One is branches of government that fight each other. In Japan that happened all the time prior to their surrender in WW2. Gunbatsu I think they called it. It's sort of assumed in the series that the audience is familiar with this phenomenon, which is kind of hard for westerners to wrap their heads around. For instance, in the opening scene of the first movie the rough equivalent of the State Department & local police exchanges gunfire with the rough equivalent of the FBI. That would confuse the fuck out of most westerners, who would assume both groups are 'the good guys' and on the same side.

There needs to be some kick ass sniping scenes with Saito, tachikomas, lots of Togusa's Mateba, and of course Batou kicking everyone's ass.

But yes, gratuitous display of ScarJo's magnificent titties would be true to the original vision of GITS.
