My wife and I went to see Garden State this weekend at the Magnolia, an art theater here in Dallas. It was written and directed by Zach Braff, the guy who plays the young white doctor on "Scrubs." It was a good movie, but what struck me was the look of one of the previews. It was for a movie called Ghost in the Shell II: Innocence. It's the sequel to an anime movie based on a Japanese manga comic book. Just from the preview for the sequel and what little I've seen about the first one, it appears that the Matrix was totally derivative. Has anyone seen the original movie, and is it worth tracking down? |

Ghost in the Shell is a FANTASTIC flim, WELL worth watching. It was just on one the pay channels the other night and I caught it on Tivo. The original movie is pretty good. I feel that it is kind of overrated and other anime in the "what is the nature of reality" genre do it better. However, it is certainly considered an anime classic and is worth it just for the very well executed animation. There is also a 26 episode TV series that follows upon the movie that I understand is also very good. |
Kinda like my wife, except my wife shoots modified iso, not Weaver. |
It only freaks me out when it's with girls that look underage - which is a LOT of Japense anime, from what I understand. "Sailor Moon" for example, is supposed to be a kid's show - but I find it incredibly disturbing. IIRC, there was very little of that in Ghost in the Shell - mostly just in the begining. But it didn't bug me since she's an adult - and plus, since her body is robotic, it's not as naughty, somehow. |
Your wife is a cyborg, or your wife looks like that? Either is pretty sweet! |

The Matrix is a classic example of the 'Cyberpunk' genre. Dystopian future and neural connections to the brain that allow you to 'jack in' to an Internet-like computer network, a shared virtual-reality experience, or to share the sensory experience of someone else. Read Neuromancer by William Gibson (published in 1984). He is credited by many with starting the genre. And it's an excellent book. Yes, it's all been done before, but The Matrix was a lot of people's first taste of the genre. Maybe Johnny Mnemonic (which was based on a short story by William Gibson) or Strange Days, but neither was nearly as popular as The Matrix. |
Thanks for the correction. I guess that I'll have to rent the series(es) (checks NetFlix). I haven't yet because the movie just didn't capture my attention very much. The action was great, the plot was great, but the execution left me thinking "Meh..." at the end. I guess that it was not F'ed up enough for my tastes. I need my entertainment to cause a visceral reaction for me to really enjoy it. ![]() |
Netflix has the first two DVDs (episodes 1-8). I love how we have to wait months between DVD releases (2 months in the case of Last Exile). Most american series come out in their entirety. I mean, Firefly was not releases a disc at a time, was it? |
I think it has to do with production costs and translation time. They release the first disc as they are still dubbing the next couple. That way they can get hotter titles out faster, and people are willing to wait for the next dub, rather than getting a fansub off the net. They have to recoup the money they spend anyway ASAP, so they can also get cash flowing in for the released ones, to pay for dubbing the next one. Paying for the production of an entire series, even if it is just for the dubbing, is money they have to lay out. By staging the releases, they spend alot less, which frees up capital to buy other licenses, and speed up the time a product is in front of the viewer. While it sucks in a way to wait to find out what happens next, it's not much different than the old movie serials of old, where you had to wait till next week to see what happens next. You could always just play one of the eps from the DVD a week. Since each DVD has three or four eps, you wouldn't have to wait too long for the next one. Ross |

The first GITS was fantastic, but in that "the book is better" way. Even you non-Manga fans should pick up and just drool at Shirow's artwork. I've been a fan of his since I first discovered the Appleseed books that Eclipse put out in the 80s. Can't wait for either GITS2 or the Appleseed movie to come out. The Appleseed movie looks exactly like it should-- Incredible. It's a mix of digital and "flat" conventional animation that made my eyes bug out and my jaw hit my lap when I first saw it. |
