I have a good friend that is going to be graduating the academy in about a month.  What would be some good ideas to get him that he could use out on patrol?  What are some of the better brands of stuff to get?  I'd like to get him something that will last.   Thanks

$200 maybe $250. Just not sure what to get. Sounds like he gets the basics. He will get some S&W cuffs and a ASP and a Sig 226 is his service weapon. I know he picked up a S&W shield for a back up. Plus they supply armor too.

Good, small, rechargeable LED flash light and/or a good knife. Both can be had within your budget and will be more useful than just about anything else you could get him. Twenty years in LE and thats the direction I would go if I was getting a gift for an academy grad.

What light would you recommend?

Just talked to him. They give him a stinger led for a light. He said he may need more cuffs. Any recommendations on those? I know there are lots of different brands.

Cuffs are like shoes, everyone is loyal to a brand.  Best to bend his ear and get him what he wants/uses.

EDIT:  I'ma fan of Peerless hinged cuffs, #802 I think.

Knife or Danner boots are the next best thing.  Waterproof and depending where he is, insulated.

+1 on rechargable flashlight...it's the tool I use every single night. Knives and multitools are cool but I hardly use them.
