I have no idea what is this even.....

I have never used an elliptical machine before.  It is an odd beast.  It is a Sole E95.

Do any of you regularly use an elliptical machine?  What benefits do you see?

Wife just picked up the same machine a week ago. I do not go to the gym at all so my experience is limited. From what I was told the sole is a great unit. Much better than norditrac machines. Anyways I ride mountain bikes and was surprised how well the work out will translate over to my bike. Very similar motions. I also learned when you turn up the resistance and do a mountain work out it will kick your ass in about 20 min.

Huh, I didn't think of it but it does work the muscles that are used in bike riding.  I had the ACL in my knee replaced and the elliptical machine gives me the same soreness that riding a bike does.

I tore my Achilles in highschool. Running for more than 30 seconds at a time leads to a couple days of being sore and in pain. Not sure if it's the impact of running or what but I don't have any issues on the bike or elliptical.

Ellipticals can be very effective for general cardio health, burning calories, etc. It's an effective calorie burner that is very-low impact.

Make sure you increase the resistance to a pretty high point. Depending on the machine I am usually around 13-14 on the resistance setting. You want your RPMs to be up enough that your in the 8-11 mph range as well though.

If you are unsure about it, check your heart rate and make sure it's adequately elevated. You can even do HIIT on an elliptical but I haven't tried that yet.

My heart rate is certainly elevated by it!

It sure is an odd motion to me to use the machine.  I guess I will get used to it.

You get a better workout when you use your hands. If you want a bit of a rest you can put your hands on the center handles and use legs only.
