Two actually.
1 - Why was Maximus picked up by the slave trader in the first place ? 2 - Why didn't he just take off...escape ? Clearly, with his skill set he could have whenever he wanted. And the "then there wouldn't be a movie" obvious answer isn't good enough.....

I'll stab at #2 also.
Once he discovered his dead wife and son he was out and didn't halfway care if he lived or died much less escaped. After he learned he could be within striking distance of Caesar whatever his name was, he had renewed focus and purpose. By then, staying alive and a gladiator was all part of the plan. |

Thus likely someone who knew how to fight and someone Rome wouldn't care about. 2. Where would he go? Also, if he gets caught it is crucifixion, which is a much, much, much worse death than combat. If he kills someone while attempting escape every slave in the villa is put to death. Slave revolts by definition had to be "go big or go home." |
| Why did Maximus and the rest wear body armor when in the arena? Gladiators typically only wore armor on their extremities? Why were there Viking helms in the armory right before the first big battle in the arena? Why was Lucius Verus a kid when he was actually a Co Emperor with Aurelius? Hmmmmmm...... |

You know what drove me nuts when I went to Rome? Every vendor under the sun selling replica Gladiator helmets and figures like the movie. They even sold them at one of the museum stores. I had to ask...the answer made sense...it is what the tourists expect to see and buy, so that's what they sell. So sad. |
