Well I was laid off today!

The company I work for is down sizing because our customer is not doing well.

I was an in house rep for an integrated supply company.

I was laid of in 2008 and was lucky enough to get this gig, now I guess it is the unemployment line.

At 56 years old I am not the most desirable applicant.

I just need to figure out what to do.

No severance pay, but I get 3 days of unused vacation, and what little I have in my 401.

Very temped to say fuck it and join the FSA........but I was raise by a Marine and don't have it in me to quit!!

I'm in the same boat.  Got laid off last friday.

I said to hell with working for others and am going into business for myself.  I'm opening a smoked rib, chicken, pork and brisket joint.  Starting small with a mobile unit, stowing away cash til I can afford to move into a good location with no loan or borrowing.

If you want to move to Texas you can set up in my parking lot right next to a massive sportsplex and crucsh as much money working weekends and evenings from 5-8pm as most restraunts make being open all the time.  I have an employee who clears a couple hundred profit cash selling water, gatorade and sodas right out front.

This seems to be the hot ticket lately.  There's a really popular wood-fired pizza truck in my area.  They do catering and events.  Great stuff!

THIS!!!!!

It happened to me a year ago. I'm 55 and had 25 years of service with the same company. I relocated for them (uprooting my entire family). 25 years ago this was not a POS company. Now, there was not even a "bye, bye & good luck". I was told 6 months prior to layoff that my job was being eliminated. After that, until I walked out the door for the last time, I was treated like I had the plague.

Fortunately 30 years of maxing out 401K, 30 years of compounded savings and ability to take early pension, I simply said FUCK IT and retired.

BEST DECISION I EVER MADE!!!!!

My advise to you friend is to look at all your options and make decisions based on the NEW employer creed (which is to turn and burn employees) and do what is BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!

Its fine to look back, but only to learn from your past employers to break the cycle of mistreatment by employers!

When you have worked for that long getting unemployment benefits is not joining the FSA, it is using the benefits that you have already paid into.

Sorry to hear you got laid off OP, keep your chin up and press on.  Sometimes something like this leads to a positive change in a person's life.

I'm surprise there's so much hate here on ARFCOM directed towards employers.  The last several decades of government mandated regulations have made it hard on many employers, along with a long list of foreign competition and other reasons.  Be thankful you had the opportunity to work were and when you did.  Pretty damn soon we may all be working for the government or China part time!!

Its never too late to be a pimp.

Go back to school and you can collect unemployment for 2 years I think.

A tech degree or slappin hos is where its at

Id probably give handies and blowies for awhile but eventually youll need dental insurance or nobody will want it

On a serious note.  Sorry about your luck. This can happen to any one of us at any time.  You will find something and find it soon because you will look.  If you want a job and cant find one don't be afraid to pick up and go where work or opportunity is.  Most people don't and end up fsa because they think jobs come to them.

Any meat processing plants around? They will hire you and pay you a bit more because they would not be taking a chance with hiring a illegal. Speak Spanish? If so you will make supervisor in no time.

This is why I have made saving as much money as possible and reducing my cost of living my main financial priorities. If I had any advice to an 18 year old then it would be to live cheap and save your money. You never know how old you'll be when you get retired.

Thanks for all the words of support.

I'll get up tomorrow ready to kick ass....just hard to explain to a 10 year old what lay offs are and the whole looking for a job, she was 5ish the last time and didn't really notice.

I'll head over to the unemployment office Monday AM and start the paper work.

The company I worked for has several customers, the issue is they would require a move to another state and they won't pay any moving costs.
