Why is "pure" gold always "99.99% ?

If it was pure, wouldn't it be 100%??

Mapleleafs are 99.999% pure. Am. Eagles are less, but the gold content is as labled.

Pure gold is softer, and the ML will get dinged and dented or scratched easier than the AE.

Plus, refining to 100 would be much costlier.

I think it's because it is impossible to refine it to 100% pure. There will always be something in the gold keeping it from being 100% pure.

99.9999%(4 9s) is the most pure gold can be refined to. Gold will always contain traces of copper, silver, etc as impurities.

99.95% is the bare minimum considered pure gold.
