I need recommendations for a good coffee maker for my parents. They have an old Krups machine that they love, but it's falling apart and is kind of a fire hazard. They have to remember to unplug it as soon as it's done brewing because the water heater in it doesn't ever turn off.

Anyway, they love it so much because it has insulated carafes and those weird conical filters. I know there are some fellow coffee nerds on here, so has anyone got recommendations for a good drip coffee maker? They won't grind their own coffee and want an automatic drip. Not looking to spend more than $150ish.

Thanks.

Why don't you get them a keurig?

I mean, my parents used a percolator and I got them  a Keurig a couple of years ago for Christmas and they love it.  They were able to make the two century transition just fine (ok well it was an electric percolator so one century )

They have one already, but don't really use it much. Dad fell in love with Cafe Bustelo and refuses to drink anything else.

BUN is fast, but it is an energy hog.

You drink coffee in the morning, but that BUN is keeping that tank hot 24/7.

I just sold my Keurig on Craigslist...I figured out I was paying >$60/lb for coffee because it came in one-use plastic cups that can't be reheated from the pot when your cup gets cold.

I went back to a Mr. Coffee.

I just bought my mom one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PLQ5H2

BUNN MCU Single Cup Multi-Use Home Coffee Brewer

Brews K-Cup® packs, ground coffee, tea pods or bags, loose tea and more
Includes Cup, Ground Coffee, Pod and Hot Water Drawers
Pulse Brew option extracts bolder flavor
Brews 4 to 14 ounce servings
Removable drip tray to fit most travel mugs
K-Cup® is a registered trademark of Keurig, Incorporated. BUNN® is not affiliated with Keurig, Incorporated

It's awesome. single cup brewer that actually makes a good cup at right temperature using your own grounds. (in addition to using k-cups, pods, tea bags, etc.)

I have one a lot like that that I use the crap out of, but Dad has told me in the past that he won't go back to glass carafes. He likes the insulated carafes because he can brew a pot and drink off it all morning without burning the coffee on the heater.

I asked this same question on Arf a few months ago.  Bonavita was the answer.

It is easily the best drip coffee maker I have ever had.

It makes hot fresh coffee and it is extremely easy to clean.

How much can it really use? I'm assuming the tank is vac insulated like a thermos. My vac insulated coffee mug keeps a cup hot for like 10 hours.

Techivorm
I have a 1 cup brewer and the thing is nice.
I wanted the multi cup techivorm but a client had the one cup at her home where I was working - I mentioned " how do you like that techivorm?" She was sorta surprised that I knew about'em ( thanks to reading it here) and said that she wants the keriug style since brewing with the techivorm takes about 4 mins.
Long story short traded labor for the coffee maker - we were both happy, I got one cheap and she got some of her cash back on a 200 buck plus coffee maker.

Yeah its single cup. Bunn also make 8-12 cup brewers. The big thing with Bunn is the fantastic reliability, and the fact that they nail the temperature.

Ive had multiple Kuerigs but the MCU is far superior. It brews strong, HOT coffee and has never failed. Over time, like a year or so, the small, fine filter insert in the bottom of the grounds tray will start to clog with buildup. Twice now Ive called Bunn and they sent me replacement filters free of charge, no questions asked. We've had ours for probably 4 years now and its still running perfectly every day. I will never buy anything but Bunn coffee makers.

I don't really know...but it's not insulated very well, if at all.  You can feel the heat, and hear it every time it "reheats" the water.....all day and night.

I use a Cuisinart that is carafe-less like this one:

Makes great coffee, doesn't burn the coffee when it's sitting there and you just set the cup in there and press the lever down to fill your cup. Less spilled coffee that way.

Love mine.

You're paying for convenience and fresh coffee in every cup.  I drink very little coffee at home and the keurig works better for me because it makes one cup at a time and you only brew exactly as much as you need..  If I bought a pound of ground coffee and made pots most would go to waste and the coffee would be stale before I got to the end of the can.

I  go between a reusable filter and k cups depending on my mood.

I suppose that makes sense. Why drive up production cost like that when it's just electric paid by the users and most will never think of it. I'll plug in my kill-a-watt on my mom's and see what it uses.

This is what I thought of first too. Heck you don't even need to use the kcups - just a reusable filter and grounds.

However that will also depend on how much they drink every day too. I usually only have a cup or two and my partner has it rarely, so it's not worth using a regular coffee pot for us.
