I've just accepted a job offer...

As part of the package, I will be given a company car to drive around, which includes fuel, maintenance, etc.

The car that I will be given is...a HYBRID camry...with ONE gear

I think I will be driving the least masculine car on arfcom.  It looks like it comes with a good amount of options as standard though, including a rear vision camera and a 6 stacker CD player.  Apparently its a pretty nice car to drive.

Although I can now use my new found eco friendliness and my care for the environment to chat up chicks, cos you know, I'm all caring and that, and theres only one mother earth etc.

Looks like I will have to stock up on assault boomerangs to compensate.

Gas is pretty close to $4 a gallon here, so if free gas meant driving an eco weenie car for work(only), I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Don't be stupid, take the car and free gas.

I fail to see a problem.

I'll drive a hot pink miata if it's free.

This. If driving an EcoBox detracts from your manhood, well...

Gas just jumped $0.10 a gal to $4.08 (lowest price in town) today
I would take anything free to drive

As has already been noted - perhaps you need to disconnect your vehicle from your perception of self...

If you are worried that driving a (sort of) small car will cause you to lose your masculinity, you have already crossed that bridge.

I have a Miata that I bought, brand new, 20 years ago last month.

Not the wife's, not a purchase of convenience –– I chose the car (after having had a big-block Monte Carlo and a heavily-modded Camaro as my first and second cars, respectively) and I have not regretted it once.

But, then again, my masculinity has never relied upon or been at the mercy of the cars I do or don't drive. YMMV.

Maintenance and fuel?

Pfffft. I don't know how they rate cars down under, but here in the states a company car is the second best off road vehicle made - right behind a rental car.

I'd drive an Isetta if my company paid for it...

Looks like your boss doesn't want you picking up chicks while on the clock.

But any company car and gas is a nice perk.  Congrats.

Real men wouldn't care what people thought of the vehicle they drive.  Now, if you get a purse with a tiny puppy so sit in the passenger seat......

I will be using it as a personal vehicle as well, as it is stipulated that it can be used as such.

Fuel prices and car prices here prevent me from getting a weekend car.  Car devaluation is VERY low.

By all means, I'm not complaining about getting free fuel and a fully maintained car.  I'm just stating that I'll now be perceived as an enviro weenie and I'll be driving an effeminate vehicle, a vehicle which is possibly more effeminate than any car on arfcom.

At least you can change gears in it

I still can't get my mind around a single gear.  How does this work???!!!  Engine dynamics when accelerating would be odd, since there would be no change of gears.

You can still save your manliness by burning this song to a CD & playing it in the car constantly.

I'd drive one of those just for the novelty of it... if I could fit in it, of course.

probably CVT (or whatever it is) - think of it more as smooth gears.....

put a BFL on it and you'll feel better - right over the hybrid badge

here ya go

not a bad looking car to be honest - better than a prius :)

oh, looking at it, my wife's mitsu has a CVT..... drives just like a regular car - you probably won't notice the difference

Nope. Least masculine car is a light powder blue Geo tracker with hot pink pinstripes. This is not debatable

An annoying paid for car isn't really an enducement to me as I have owned all my cars for 20+ years, but if someone wanted to supply me with a Porsche with Obama's face on the hood, well maybe not

Anyway how can a car have one gear?

Strap a sign to the top that says "I left my a/c at home set to 60 degrees and I burn oil fields for warmth in the winter".

I fill up twice a week on a good week.

I wish my company would give me a free car or, at least, free gas. No such luck though. I don't care if they made me drive a hot pink Prius, I would be making money driving it and not spending money. That's a win in my book.

Amen, except mustangs, fire birds, chargers, camaros, cudas, gtos, darts, javelins that about sums up the non truck vehicles out side of John Deere and Case IH that I would drive.

Sort of.   The Camry uses the same system the Prius does.  It's effectively a CVT, but not in the way that normal CVT transmissions are.

Here is a good description with an animation of how it works.  Pretty clever, actually.
