I've been looking at the ChromeCast. Can I get some opinions on it?

I guess I don't understand it. Can't you just do all of that on a laptop with an HDMI cable?

What are planning on doing with it? I own both Chromecast and the Fire stick.

If you're just doing Netflix, Hulu, etc., go Fire.

The downside to CC is using tying down your phone or computer to use it. But I think CC is better for youtube stuff.

To answer both questions. I'd like to be able to mirror my MacBook on the tv without a cable (Which I know it doesn't do at present) and play movies off my NAS server. Kind of looks like it only does subscription services from what I've read.

I do too.

I just watched the gunsmith of Williamsburg show from another thread on here.

I use it to watch video off my computer using Plex media server, and for watching youtube and netflix. It's simple and easy to use. I haven't done any screen mirroring since I first got it.

Only downside is (as of right now) you have to use chrome. So I do all my surfing in firefox, then open plex in chrome to watch stuff. Youyubr and netflix I do from my phone, the apps just saw that there was a chromecast and the cast button showed up. I first used it at a friends house and was amazed at how simple it was

there  are a LOT of video sights not supported and non functional with CC.

You can cast any tab in Chrome from your device to a Chromecast.  Some apps and sites (Youtube, Twitch, Hulu, Netflix, HBOGO...) have built in google cast support.  There are apps in the Play Store that allow you to cast anything you want to your Chromecast.  I have a Chromecast (bedroom) and a Nexus Player (living room).  The casting works the same across the google devices.

I absolutely love it, and I own Roku's and Fire Sticks. Controlling with my smartphone is great.  Trolling Youtube is great on the big screen.

Worth it for YouTube on the big screen if nothing else.

A friend asked me the same question a month ago. He doesn't have a smart tv but does have a hdmi input. I told him if I didn't already have a smart TV I would already own the Chromecast as it's dirt cheap and basically turns a regular TV into a smart tv. He bought it and loves it. Another friend has the same TV as I do but bought the Chromecast just to check it out. He tells me there is no advantage if you already have a smart TV.

For the minimal cost I would think its a no brainer. I'm still constantly tempted to get one just to play with it.

Love it. Replaced my HTPC with Chrome Cast and Plex. Wife (no pics) can now use her pad or phone to watch anything from our 10tb raid 5 dnla video server by  2 clicks on her screen. 1080p 5.1 audio for $35

For an extra $15 you can get a Roku or Amazon streaming stick that come with a remote. I have both a Chromecast and a Roku and prefer the Roku by far

Actually that's one of the things I like about Chromecast - no remote to lose.

Got one for free on Christmas (yankee swap) and I love it!  I watch a bunch of youtube videos and the ability to tell it to play from my laptop or smart phone, and then go on using it, I love it!

You CAN cast your whole screen:

You can multitask...send a tab to the TV, and do whatever else you want on your laptop.

If you have a smart TV, it's negligibly worthwhile.

I bought one from Best Buy just because. It was $22 I think...and got a $20 (well...still waiting on that email...fuckers...) credit to Google Play store.

If you have movies burnt to your NAS, there's work arounds to getting it to work.

It's just cumbersome.

Works fine but no remote. Chained to computer, phone or tab.

Get the Roku.

You could.

Or, you could stick the Chromecast in your HDMI slot, have it work just like it would on your laptop and then you can do an infinite number of things with your phone.

I use it in bed.

I've got both, if you don't have cable, I think CC is better because you can stream cable shows from a laptop and all sorts of other items like HBO GO (which Amazon Fire doesn't do).

Show box & local cast are the best apps for CC
