They were on the fascist side with general Franco.

More than likely crash-landed somewhere where the Germans recovered it repaired it, marked it so it was recognize this friendly and probably test flew it.

We did the same thing when we captured the first Japanese zero in the Aleutian Islands

The germans used captured allied aircraft to familiarize their own pilots with their capabilites. A traveling squadron known as " the Rosarius Circus" would demonstrate the captured aircraft to Luftwaffe units.

Kg200, a secret special operations squadron operated captured aircraft, especially B-17s for covert operations like agent drops.

The germans had to use  U S aviation gas taken from wrecks or other sources as their own low octane gas would ruin the US engines.  The Italians rendered  their only captured P-38 unflyable in that manner.

An excellent reference book on the subject is "Strangers in a Strange Land" by Squadron/signal.

It appears to be the underside of the seat. The notch you see in it is where the control stick lines up with.

Maybe the cushion that goes in the seat pan?

Did not see it till you all clarified. That is the entire seat pan though correct? The ground man working in the cockpit is facing the tail?

To me it looks like the entire seat has been pulled out and is laying on the front of the windscreen and that is possibly the bottom of the seat pan that has the number on it

If you look at this picture you can see the embossed dish of the seat pan if you look at the picture that looks like the reverse of that if that makes sense.

ETA- I just realized that there is somebody sitting in the cockpit of that picture so hell I don't know LOL

It's the seat pan. I suspect the number would match the A/C number.

He-177 in the hangar? not sure
Edit: pretty sure, judging by the bubble top fuselage gun position, and the He-177 on airfield out of hangar. The gear is a dead giveaway on it.

Now that would be the way I'd want to do it, but I think he said it was to wide to be on the road. So i think they meant to drive it down the road using the floats as the frame. That didn't work so they cut up the 27(?) sets, and the only one left is the example in the video from the 80's.
