I have made the pilgrimage many times. I stopped by the town of Rochefort on my first trip. Yep, those monk make great beer!!
Just remember the monasteries are cloistered. So, visits to to monasteries are not that great at many of them.
Still, Belgium is a great place to visit! For both him & her! They're other claims to fame is chocolate & lace.

Oh, yeah!  Some large cities have a red light district.

PS They also, have great waffles (Liege style is the better one) & known for fries (Frites) too.

Actually, The whits(White) are about the only spiced beers. Many beers like Trippels have spicy notes in many Belgian yeast strains.

The district in Brussels is by the elevated railway. I only saw it from the trains. Not listed or schedules on a 'beer trip'. FWIW -the district even has window shopping from what I saw & have been told. But, I just saw from 100 yards away on a train. :-(

Oh, hefes:
Weihenstephaner Hefeweissen & Ayinger Brau Weise are great German hefes.

Roll the bottles on a table/bar before opening to get the yummy yeast stirred up.

PS light through green bottles changes the chemistry of hops in beer. Creates Mercaptan 'skunkiness.'

No, no, no, Sam Adams Oktoberfest is nasty.  One it lies, it isn't an Oktoberfest fest it is a fall ale , two they brew it with used tampons or at least that's what it taste like.  An Oktoberfest should be crisp and clean.  Try a a Hofbrau next time.

Not just wheat beers.  http://blog.beeriety.com/2010/08/20/sugar-spice-an-intro-to-beer-spices/ "As legendary beer writer Michael Jackson noted, “the Belgians are the greatest users of herbs and spices in beer.” And you don’t have to be a serious beer expert to feel the truth of this statement. A wide range of Belgian brews feature spice as a prominent ingredient -most notably, Belgian witbiers and saisons. Traditional spices include coriander, sweet and bitter orange peel, black pepper, grains of paradise, and sweet gale – all of which provide the sweet, spicy, and summer-y flavors that you except from those styles."

Back in my beer drinking days...

In the Northwest, we have a place called BJ's (don't laugh, true story) that does microbrews.  Come wintertime they have what they call Whisky Barrel Stout.  Dark, smoky and delicious.  Oh, and the ABV hovers near the barley wine side.  Not knowing this the first time I tried it, I pounded pints until I couldn't find the door to leave.  Oh my gosh, just so good!  I still have dreams about it.
