Grocery Prices Are Out Of Control (Page 7 of 12)

Raising your own food for the average person isn’t much if any cost savings. You gain the health factor knowing what is or isn’t in the food but cost savings isn’t much. You can buy eggs at the store cheaper than raising chickens but the eggs are better. We have a garden it doesn’t save us anything. It’s seasonal and we grow more than we eat so there is canning costs and time involved. We only grow strawberries, tomatoes, and various types of peppers now. You can buy a half a cow cheaper but the cost savings isn’t much cut down by processing fees, freezer large enough, electricity, and generator because you don’t want to risk losing all that in a power outage. |

Almost all chicken processed in the US is "washed" with antimicrobial baths. Very very few processes use bleach, it has been getting phased out for years. Even when more was washed with bleach solutions it is a very very low concentration. |

The diesel fuel prices are hurting me a lot more than grocery prices. Over $6/gal in my area now. Almost $200 to fill up my truck every week.....that's almost more that what I'm paying on my mortgage every month..... Trump can blame Biden all he wants, but I've never seen $6/gal diesel...even when Biden was in office. |

By the time I was done and had them processed I had hours of labor into something I could have probably bought for ten-twenty bucks at Walmart  That doesn't even include the actual planting and upkeep. My eggs are free though. We sell enough to cover feed. It's just part of our lifestyle, but I wouldn't call it a huge savings. |

There are benefits for sure but for someone actually struggling with food costs the savings aren’t great and for some things the upfront costs are high for someone actually struggling. I doubt most here are actually struggling just trying to be healthy and frugal in that case it’s worth it if you have the time to invest. |

I figured out I can do it for less than half what something comparable costs at the store. Canning it will let it keep a long time too. |

Between two grocery stores (walmart and Food Lion) and Sam’s online, I think we spent about $400 in the last week. Sam’s was higher ($200ish) because they had the laundry detergent we like on sale so we got extra and we needed dishwasher pods. Walmart was around $130 and Food Lion was around $70. Prices here have been fairly stagnant for the last two years except eggs have come way down. Personally, I believe prices should be lower, especially on fuel. Diesel should be about $4/gallon considering crude is $100/barrel. |

My wife and I are retired. We are not rich but have a comfortable enough retirement that allows us to eat pretty much whatever we desire. We typically go out to eat or do takeout once a week and don't include that in our grocery tabultion. Before the Biden inflation we were spending about $600 a month at the grocery store. The Biden inflation jumped it up to almost $1K a month. Now it is about $1200 a month for about the same food and other grocery store items we were spending half that amount for prior to 2020. |

If there's a Winco https://www.wincofoods.com/ near your home, it's worth checking out. It's not life changing, but I bet we save $50 or more over the same shit from Walmart. Some stores handle whole grain wheat - 25lb bags - if you're into that. Rice, sugar, beans, all that in bulk at my store. We just got a grinder/mill. I believe there's some benefit to eating bread without added shit in it. |

The maddening thing is how the FDJT jock-riders would have treated our EXACT same scenario we're in now, with Biden or Kameltoe as president. Do you think they'd be saying, "You know, I don't really like him/her, but they did a really good thing by attacking Iran! I'm happy to pay these fuel prices!'
