I've been finishing my AR project lately and it makes me nervous. I've never spent this much on a gun before because I'm used to only buying complete guns when I find a great deal or having guns given to me as gifts. It makes me wonder, what portion of your income is dedicated to guns? Does anybody budget for gun purchases? Is it always a world of desperate impulse buying? |

After I'm done buying ammo and guns for the month, I always hope there is enough left over to feed the wife, kids and dog. I guess that could be considered budgeting. |

Until I've got all I want or Obama's out of office I have a "floor" below which my checking isn't allowed to dip. If I make more money or spend less on other stuff this month, I buy more guns and ammo and such. If I make less money or spend more on everything else I don't buy jack. I increase that "floor" occasionally, but the timing and amount are a judgement call. I cranked the floor up a quite a bit last year to hedge against unemployment. |

Set amount from a discretionary account (ok, a cigar box in the safe).
Sometimes this account gets raided for unforeseen events, (January it was used to partially cover a car repair bill) but my regular savings/investment set aside never goes for weapons/ammo/etc. I have a list of items I'm looking at/for on a spreadsheet. Sometimes the rows get re sorted or edited. As $ accumulates in the cigar box I pick off the item in "A1". Works for me. |
| I really haven't had much of a gun budget this year, tax returns bought a .22 kit for the AR and some ammo/mags, but other than that, I'm still working on getting my budget for this year set. I anticipate at least pulling off a Remington 700 in .308 and 870 12ga by the end of the year, then I'll be pretty well set with the fundamentals of a collection. |
