I am trying to decide how to lay out my gun room. Its 10' wide and 15' deep with 12' ceiling. I am thinking heavy duty free standing shelving down one wall for ammo and supplies. The otherwall I am thinking about a long bench but I cant decide if I want table height for sitting on a stool or chair or a bar height for standing. My back gives me problems if I sit for too long so I am inclinded to go bar height but somethings like reloading need precision that I do better at sitting down. Any thoughts on the ideal work bench height and why?

Thanks

Build it yourself and go with both heights.

Go with sitting heighth, but look into either a Lee, od Dillon Press Riser that will put your press up a little higher so you can work it on yer feet. Sturdy, and less money than 2 separate bench heighths, and can be moved and reset as needed using T-nuts.

I'm 6ft tall and my gun/reloading bench is 35 1/2 inches high. Basically kitchen counter height. Works well for sitting and standing work.

My woodwork benches come to the knuckle on my thumb when I'm standing.  I too have a bad back like all old Paratroopers.

what i did was pick my chair, measure to the top of your thighs sitting down, and add 3 inchs.  so its perfect for you.  if you feel you want taller or shorter, do so.  but thats how i did my bench.

Stand up straight with your arms at your side.

Bend one arm at the elbow.

Measure from your elbow to the ground.

Subtract 2" and build your bench to that height.

If you use a beam scale, install a shelf so that it is at eye level.
