Hi,

I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong forum. I couldn't find a better place for it.

Anyway, I'm looking for a good gun smithing course/school in the seacoast area of NH.  I've been a machinist for 30+ years and I think gun smithing could really be a useful skill set to have.

Thanks!

If you can find a local shop under a "real" gunsmith try for an apprenticeship....

very few gunsmithing schools out there None in your area that I know of....

I went to MIT for my gunsmithing degree.....

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I can't do an apprenticeship unless the guy works nights.

I have seen some online courses, but have been hesitant to look into them.  Any input on the online courses could be helpful.

Thanks again.

Well as far as online courses go 99% of them are junk and bunk

but the American Gunsmithing Institute courses are a pretty good from what I have seen of them...

Isn't he the MidwayUSA founder? I'll check that out. To be honest, I'm looking for a career change so I'm not sure that would be sufficient.

I would think that's the way to go until you have a lot of experience. I'm sure you could make some money at it if you have a good reputation and experience. I mean some custom builders/makers make pretty good money and always seem to be busy.

been doing it 22+ years. it has its fun moments, but most of the time its customers that could suck the fun out of a free machine-gun shoot. Imagine dealing with customers that are a carbon copy of GD. and you will see first hand how cheap gun people are.

To make money, you need to specialize in something where there is enough demand but not a lot of competition.  The only example that I can think of is cowboy action gunsmiths.  90% of CAS shooters shoot modified guns, but there are limited gunsmiths out there that really know how to make them run.  In this case, there isn't an off-the-shelf solution, no matter how much money you spend.  The guns need considerable work to be reliable when run fast.   Very niche market, but that is exactly why the cowboy smiths are successful.

I make decent money as a gunsmith because I was lucky enough after school to land a contracting job pretty quick which in turn opened up R&D for me with a few manufacturers...which in turn let me get the Job I have to day working as a contractor for the .gov

but I was lucky (and good)

Unless you have enough capital to start your own shop and have the dedication to do good work and not be "Fly by the Night" you will not make money working for others in this industry.

Most of the large gun companies only need 1-5 smiths for custom and return work and pay less than $15 an hour starting off...

When I got out of school 2009 I was offered a job by one of the top 10 (in size) gun companies to build custom 1911's

they offered me $11.20hr and wanted me to move cross country on my own dime.
