Can a gunsmith ship a repaired firearm directly back to the owner, or does it have to go through an FFL?

How about if it crosses state lines?

I've had hanguns and long guns shipped directly back to me from a manufacture or gunsmith.  Of course they have to have the proper licensing.

Shouldn't the gunsmith have his own FFL?

For repair or replacement it can be sent directly back to the owner

If you send it through an FFL then it has to go back to the FFL, if you send it yourself then it can come back to you.

Most reputable gunsmiths have an 07 FFL SOT.

Yes, this smith has an 07.

Main reason I ask is because I sent a serialed item to a shop for some threading, they said it should be a week or so turnaround, and it's not back yet.  And I'm getting ansty.

Was wondering if it had to ship back to an FFL, which I of course did not arrange for.

Yeah yeah, I know, call the shop.

True, as long as the component being replaced is not the serial numbered item (think lower receiver).
