Update video drivers to the latest version.  Try toggling the display output with the hotkey (usually Fn-F5)  Read the TV's manual and check what resolutions the TV will accept via the HDMI input, then use one of them.  If you are cloning displays, LCD and monitor resolution must be the same.

There is a check box in Windows 7 (and probably vista) in your display settings called  "Use projector".  Check it.

That should enable the HDMI port.  After that, it's a simple matter of plugging in the cable, booting the laptop, then turning on the TV and switching to the HDMI input you are connected to.

Have you actually done that before? I thought the use projector was for the VGA out.

On my laptop all I have to do is plug in the HDMI, change the source on the TV and change the default audio output to HDMI and I'm done. I do it all the time to watch movies on my TV that are on my hard drive.

I have my TV setup as an extended desktop. It can also be setup to mirror the desktop of course.

Make sure you have the correct HDMI port selected for input.

Plug and play should ask what mode you want, I usually choose Clone.
