Here is a hard one...at least for me: Win98 Everything was fine until this last week... Disk Defrag will not run past 3% Scandisk will re-start over & over I have: disconnected my cable modem closed everything but Explorer via ctrl/alt/del window run Norton 2003 Pro Disc doctor, WinDoctor. All OK. During Norton 'Wipe Info' & attempting to clean free space, restart over & over with the same message I got during Scandisk..."restarting due to disk write". I have gone to a DOS prompt and input 'netstat' and there are only 2 TCP connections...as there should be. No other connections attempting to establish. What is writing to the disk (but not seen) so regularly that it keeps interrupting maintenance? |

This is common in Win98 if there are too many task running (IM, antivirus, etc) Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the task list. Practice killing each task, get it down to as few as you can. Then give it a shot. If that doesnt work, shut down into DOS mode, and run the DOS scandisk, with a surface scan. This will ensure it is not restarting because of a serious disk error. There are tons of stuff that will be started, by the startup group, registry, win.ini, etc... that interrupt Win98. Plus, all that Norton crap is basically just crap. The cleaner the OS the better. Windows 98 is really a piece of shit OS. It really is. Windows 2000 and Windows XP are MILES ahead in all perspectives. You would be doing yourself a great service to upgrade, if your PC can handle it. |
| royce, it sounds like you have Norton Utilities. If you do, it's probably interfering for some reason. Norton programs that protects the HD or Recycle Bin can be a pain. They stop Windows System Tools from running. Have you tried Disabling Norton or removing it and re-installing? The only Norton I use is antivirus. |
