I'm trying to decide on a new smart phone and am leaning towards the HTC Touch Pro 2 windows mobile phone. I've been hearing a lot from the Apple fanboys that I should get an iphone. An Android phone is out of the question –– Google has a reputation for acting unscrupulously by doing what they want and then defending themselves in court (see the settlement of a french publisher vs. google books).

I just think the windows mobile platform is more flexible, powerful and easier to develop for than the iphone, plus Sprint has a pretty killer deal on service. Can I get some feeback from the smartphone experts on the forum?

Well, you are dead wrong about Windows Mobile and dead wrong about Android/Google, so I'd say you're on the right track.

Just get the damn iPhone, I've heard that AT&Ts voice and data service has been awesome.

HTC touch Diamond 2.

It is slow sometimes, and it is all touch screen. I have to use the little toothpick/pencil thing that came with it to text which takes forever.

I have a Touch Pro 2 on ATT. Its bad ass. Especially if you update to a newer OS build (takes 10 mins)

Most of my friends who were iPhone fanbois are telling me how crap att is and how they keep getting dropped calls.

I then tell them I never get a dropped call and I'm on ATT. Queue the wide-eyed looks of disbelief

Data tethering via usb or bluetooth, multi-tasking, full qwerty keyboard and OS flexibility more than make up for the relative lack of cool games.

Also Opera is a very good web browsing experience.

Considering the flexibility of changing calibers on the Glock is akin to the flexibility of WinMo to run any apps without approval from Apple, I think the analogy is flawed.

I have a Android phone and it's awesome.  You are really doing yourself a disservice by excluding Android.

If it does what you need it to do then stick with it.

My wife has a new non-touchscreen winmo phone (samsung jack) and loves the simplicity of it and hates the idea of something more complex

Different strokes for different folks

I have the HTC touch pro and its is the biggest piece of dog shit I have every encountered.  In fact dog shit would be as useful as this phone in that if I held dog shit to my ear I would get the same effect as this phone.  The phone or OS locks up constantly and when I say constantly I mean once or twice a day.  It shuts off in calls randomly.  Blue tooth works when it feels like it.  If you try to access the internet it does it on its own time when it feels like it.  Try to scroll through screens and it will hang up for a minute or so.  Run dont walk away form anything windows mobile or HTC. I have to resist the urge to punch verizon employees over how horrible this phone is and my hatred for my wasted money.  If you live in a area with ATT service get the iphone.  If not look at something android based and not HTC.  Again I reiterate HTC and windows mobile sucks dick.

The touch pro was not very good, I had one and was not very impressed. The problem with WinMo is that the networks put a bunch of crap on it to make it slower. This is why www.xda-developers.com is around to provide operating systems without all the crap Spint etc put on it

As you pointed out, you have a shitty slow data conection from verizon. ATT is MUCH MUCH faster. I could not use tmob/sprint or verizon personally due to lack of functionality outside of the USA

Also, FYI virtually all the android phones are made by HTC

I have the Touch Pro 2 with Sprint and it rocks.  Just a great all around device.  I know of several people who have IPhones and I came down to the same choice as you and went with the TP2 and so far haven't regretted it.

It seems to do everything reasonably well.

The one reason I still have sprint and not an iPhone is because you cant get insurance through att on the iphone. And not that I'm super hard on phones but I seem to suck the life out of electrical stuff that I carry. I have gone through at least 5 phones in the last 4 years because they just quit working but under sprints insurance and repair plan they have all been covered.

+1. My wife has the Touch Pro and we have had to replace it twice since May 2009. Sprint is replacing it with the Touch Pro 2. The sprint rep said, "We can replace it with another Touch Pro but I guarantee you'll be back within a few month so I'm just going to order you an upgraded replacement." No money out of our pocket and we didn't even buy the insurance policy when we got our phones.

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2009-12-21-google-france_N.htm ...one of many. Google has the "sue us" mentality when it comes to respecting others' property. In the case of the books issue with France, the publisher did not want Google to index its materials and Google claimed "fair use." Infringing on how the creator of a work wishes their work to be used is destructive to the creation of new works.

This, being an indication of how Google feels towards others' rights, must be considered when you allow them to have control over your communication.

I'm sure there is a topic that I would care less about than how the Phrench wish to index or non-index their written materials, but I can't think of it right now.

So you think Microsoft or Apple are innocent, angelic companies when it comes to stuff like this?

Besides, Google hasn't ignored the French court ruling, they are appealing, which is something they are entitled to do.  I don't see anywhere in the article where Google said it intended to violate French copyright law.

I don't trust Apple either. And I don't believe that it's in Microsoft's interests to own peoples' data like it is Google's. The watchdogs of government, business and industry keep a closer watch on MS. You can't even remove the battery from an iphone without tools.

At this point, between Apple's heavy-handedness with the app store, and Google's data-mining fucking EVERYTHING, MS is the LEAST evil of the three, at least in the mobile phone arena. I have an Android phone right now, which is nice, but when the Touch HD 2 drops stateside, I'm moving back. Too many Windows-compatible features to pass up, and the handset is beautiful.

Touch Pro sucks. Worthless as a phone, locks ups, works when it wants to. I just got a replacement for my first one that last a whole 45 days before the screen quit working.  The new one breaks up on phone calls or they can't here me at all.  My wife has one and we can  be in the same room and mine won't connect or it breaks up.
