We built a new house last year. Moved in almost exactly one year ago. We bought a Lennox ac/heat pump system. It's been trouble since day one. Before we moved in, the control board died and had to be replaced. The installer said they thought it was fried by a power surge.
After moving in to the house we had thermostat trouble. After the 2nd thermostat died, the company gave us a Nest gen 3. Seemed to solve the issue. In February we had a party at the house. It was unseasonably warm... that combined with the crowd and the cooking warmed it up in the house. Not to worry... I kicked on the AC which put out hot air. Another service trip and we were back up and running. AC quit again in April. Another service trip, another thumbs up from the installer. We made it until the end of July before the AC quit again. The owner of the company came out... he said it looked like the electrician had pinched the thermostat wire when they installed it causing a short and that caused the issues. He said he would come out and replace the wire, but he had it working for now. He was apologetic and seemed genuinely sorry about the whole thing. We left for vacation, I left him access to the house while we were gone. I assumed he replaced the wire. My fault for not following up. Fast forward to early November. I keep the system on heat ac mix. If it gets below 67 the heat pump kicks on, if it's over 75 the ac cools it down. That stopped working. If the heat kicked in it would keep running, same for the ac. It wouldn't shut off. The only way to stop it was to throw the breakers. Then as soon as the temp it one of the targets, it would kick on and start doing the same thing. They came out on a Friday and got it working. Said they would be back the next week to change out the wire. The next day it wouldn't heat the house. I called them, they came out again and got it working on emergency heat only until they came to rewire it. They rewired it Tuesday. Did the whole system. They once again apologized profusely. Wednesday morning I heard a banging at 545 am. I go outside and it's my heat pump. It sounds like someone trying to start an old tractor. It's not the defrost cycle... and it causes the lights to slightly flicker... I assume the compressor or motor is locking up. I called the shop, only an office worker there. He called the tech who had him ask about the filter. He said some systems run really screwed if the filter is missing or very dirty. I told him that was not the problem, but I would be happy to check. Got home, sure enough the filter was sitting beside the unit. I put it it in and away we went. No problems until today, the banging is back. I'm fed up. What's my angle here? Ask for a new system? Call the manufacturer? Ask for them to pay for a tech from another company? I've been beyond understanding... but I'm done. I'm not ready for a kill dozer, but I'm looking at plans. To their credit, the installer has been friendly and responsive... that no longer makes up for their incompetence. The installer does a lot of work. I've always heard good things. I've been cordial... no yelling or screaming. I'm past that point. TLDR: New house, new hvac. Nice installer also apparently incompetent. One year of troubles. Rage. |
