I recently installed 2 NEST thermostats in my house and when it calls for HEAT STAGE 2 nothing happens. Once this happens I have trouble getting heat stage 1 going again.

I am now having the same issue with both furnaces. Is there a setting on the furnace board that maybe I need to change?

I installed a 3rd generation stat.

My furnaces are a Tappan G6TC SERIES 90 two stage condensing furnace.

Thanks in advance and merry Christmas.

FYI I already had a HVAC guy out last week and he said everything was working fine. Of course this didn't happen when he was there.

Any help appreciated! If someone can help me solve this I'll take care of your ar15 membership for next year!

I just installed a Nest. Wish I could help you. I don't have a furnace because it's useless down here.
Mine is just a conventional AC system without a heat pump. I wasn't too sure how to hook it up because I don't have cell phone service at my new house, but it was pretty straight forward after I took a pic of the old thermostat wiring and mimicked it to the Nest, but without the jumper wires, as the nest doesn't need jumpers.

It's a neat tool to the home. Can't wait to get Internet hooked up later this week and get it set up on wifi.

I guess you've already went around and made sure all your HVAC breakers and switches are turned on?

Thanks for the reply. Yes all the power/breakers are fine. For some reason when it calls for heat stage 2  it just completely shuts down.

Installing the stat itself was simple, I'm just wondering if I need to change something on the board or if there's something somewhere else I'm missing.

Sounds like programming may be incorrect. When the stat calls for second stage heat does it say aux heat? Unit shuts down completely when this happens?

Stat says Heat Stage 2 and then everything stops. I try to get it going again and stage 1 stops working. I turn it off, turn down the set temp to 1 degree above actual temp, turn it back on and it still tries to go to stage 2

Sound like you have the wiring incorrect or the setup of the NEST wrong.

And when it calls for the W2 it has a short or something

Did you have to program a outdoor temp lockout of stage 1? Sounds like it is set up for a heat pump and locking stage 1. Is it natural gas with two stage gas valve? I didn't look up your model number.

I agree.    The nest will call for stage 2 after so many minutes of not reaching your target set temp.  Even if stage 2 wasnt hooked up at all - or if you had a single stage furnace - I believe it should still keep running single stage/stage 1  - it sounds like it's wired incorrectly or you have a short

As soon as it calls for stage 2 the entire furnace stops. If I set the fan to run the fan keeps running. Then I have a hard time getting stage 1 to heat again.

I tested the terminals with NEST and they are all working ok.

If I don't want to engage stage 2 can I just disconnect the W2 and cap it?

Take off w2 wire and cap. If the furnace stops again when it calls for stage 2, either the program is wrong, wiring is wrong or the Nest is broke. I doubt the Nest is broke since it's happing on both of them. W1 should always call even when stage two is called for unless it is in heat pump mode and the stat thinks it's too cold outside for heat pump operation so it would call for stage 2/ emergency heat.

Can you post a pic of your wiring in the nest?
