from those in the know.

I have a 500 sqft room w/ cathedral ceiling that is separated from the rest of the house by one doorway. We have had the hardest time keeping this room temperate.

It is an apparent addition to the house (not done by me) and has one 8" duct run to it for heat and ac with no return. We have a split level house but only the one HVAC unit feeding the whole shooting match.

I installed a thru wall ac unit that helps cool during really hot days but it eats the power. I want to install an HVAC unit just for this room and isolate it from the rest of the central system.

What should I be looking for in packet units? Heat pump? Dual fuel? Should I go with a lower unit cost wall unit or bite for a ducted unit? I was thinking about pulling the ac wall unit and putting in a 230v heat pump but since I will probably have to run wiring should I just go with a ducted packet unit?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Install  a ductless mini split, like a Mitsubishi Mr. Slim. I have put in a few hundred with no complaints, in situations much like yours.

the ductfree splits are the way to go, screw window-shakers, they are not worth the time and money, if they (room AC's not the Split-systems) break they are expensive to repair if you can find anyone to fix them - they are a throw-away item in my opinion.

One main HVAC unit for a two story house is the biggest mistke contrators make, it's slmost impossible to make a two story house work right with only one central HVAC unit.

since the room is an add-on get a mitsubshi ductfree, the one with the invertor type compressor, very energy effcient, quite and very well made.

I have never had an issue with any of the D.M.S. we have insatlled. That's not to say there wont be  a few lemons every now and again. But D.M.S. are the quietest HVAC units I have NEVER heard. They are quieter than any ducted system,  even variable speeds.

There are MANY different flavors of D.M.S. available, but Mitsubishi holds there dealers to the highest standards(Especially Diamond dealers). Frigidare also makes a good unit.
With a D.M.S., you have the ability to run up to 4 cassettes on some units, giving you 14-16seer, easily. They are expensive, but will quickly pay themselves off.

One thing I will bet, is, there is NO WAY IN HELL, your current system was sized to handle an additional 500sqft. At the LEAST you need to look into zoning.

I haven't seen the Daikin. Not sure our distributors carry them.
What mainline wholesaler carries them?
