My mom just called me looking for info for a camera accessory I am not familiar with.

What she is looking for is something (that she says exists) that attaches to the end of a lense allowing it to gather more light.

I'm stumped

A new lens with a larger aperture is what she is looking for.

The thing responsible for letting more light is "aperture" - the lower the aperture (smaller f/ number), the bigger opening in the lens, the more light comes into the lens.

That being said, it is not an accessory, but whole new lens.

There are couple of those lenses that ridiculously inexpensive: 35mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.8. These are prime lenses (no zoom), very sharp, and for ~$200 they are a steal.

But check with your mom, and ask if that is what this was thinking about.
Otherwise, I don't know what accessory would help her get more light.

Yeah, I'm with you guys on this.

I asked if she was looking for a flash and she said no, not a flash.

I'm stumped and searching the web.

There's a ring light for micro photography.  Other than that, everything else that you put on the end of a lens will reduce light (or just barely reduce).

You can either put more light on the subject, or get a faster lens (one w/ a wider aperture -- a lower f/ number).

So a device that makes light, not gathers it.

Do you mean a flash?

No, not a flash.

What about a ring flash?

Yeah, that's it!

I was actually picturing some complex extra-large lens-add-on that gathers light and focuses it into the plane of the original lens somehow

Does your mom know what she's doing, or was there a "miscommunication"?

After a twenty minute conversation with her photographer, it was indeed a lens hood.

I explained to dear old mom this has nothing to do with making sammiches, to give her husband the phone and get back in the kitchen!
