Which do you prefer?

I like guns period. Hell, I walk through a gun show and find something about pretty much any gun (except for Hipoint Carbines). So, don't in any way take this to mean that I dislike one or the other. I have several revolvers and a few automatics. I like them all. But recently I have developed a real love for revolvers (as much as you can love an inantimate object I guess), especially Smith and Wesson revolvers.

There is just something really uniquely American about a S&W wheelgun. They are truely timeless weapons. While the europeans were developing smaller and smaller calibers, Americans were developing more and more powerful handgun calibers. The .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum to me represent good ol' fashioned American overkill! Smith revolvers are also beautiful. Is it any coincidence that a chrome plated, pearl handled revolver will look good no matter what, but a chrome plated pearl handled automatic would only go good with a purple superfly suit? I think not!

Then there is function. Good revolvers are 100% reliable and will last forever. A revolver won't jam on you in a gun fight, they don't stove pipe, fail to eject or fail to feed. With practice you can reload a revolver as quickly as an auto. Lastly they are usually more powerful than autos too.

Like I said, I don't have anything against autos. I am scarcely very far from my Glock 17, but when I am it's only because I have a wheelgun at my side.

There is a certain simplicity about revolvers regardless of caliber

I found last range session a squib will TOTALLY make a revolver useless.

At least with a pistol you can tap rack bang and take your chances.

I love my Python, partly because it took me the better part of a year to find one I could afford.  It shoots like a dream, and the double action pull is so smooth and crisp.  That said, I prefer autos.  They just seem more practical and efficient to me.

I used to be a revolver man with a Wilson Colt 1911, but I've come to the conclusion that I'm strictly a 1911 guy now because I want the same SA on every pull.  Now, that being said, I carry a Keltec PF-9 in my pocket because it's hot and humid down here, and I'm a fairly big guy, and I can't get comfortable with the 1911 in the warm months-which is always down here.

I like to standardize on ammo, too, and we stock .22, .223, 9mm, .45 and .380-wife's P-3AT Keltec.

As much as I love revo's, I don't want one for defensive purposes if I can avoid it.

If the Hi Power didn't exist I would ask, "Where's the 'I like pie?'"

I've always wanted to try a SAA, but never got around to it. To give an informed opinion maybe I should get one.

Automatics

But unrefinished registered S.W. Magnums are pretty nice

DA/SA Automatics started to take their place as King and displace revolvers in many police Depts in North America around 1985. It made sense to dump revolvers when at the time bad guys where starting to put into use high capacity 9mm "wonder 9" DA/SA Automatics against police. Not fun firing at a bad guy with your Revolver and run dry and need to reload with 6 rounds with the other guy is still firing away at you with ten or more rounds left in his 15rd magazine. Not fun

Since you meant squib, I'm still confused...a squib will ruin any gun's day if it lodges the bullet partially down the barrel.  Plenty of nice automatics have died a horrible death after a squib, where someone racked the slide and put another bullet down the pipe behind it.

Do you mean a blown primer, perhaps?

I've had a couple grains of sand lock up a revolver cylinder.  Though very reliable, I don't see them as infallable, and I don't see autos as so bad that I'd consider a revolver a better choice.

I hate squids too.
A squib load is pretty bad for both a pistol & a revolver. Just depends on how far it goes down the barrel.

I like revolvers because they will shoot a greater variety of ammo from super hot to weak loads w/o malfunction. Easier to reload for.
In a SHTF scenario with ammunition shortages, I would prefer a revolver.

Revolvers are sexy but if i was carrying it id carry nothing but an auto if simply for capacity's sake even if you dont have to worry about magazines with a wheel gun.

But say in a zombie scenario where i have to walk around with a pistol and have no time to reload magazines id go revolver and have an auto as backup.

Except that in real live their were few to no cases of police with revolvers being outgunned. In the vast majority of police shootings, six rounds is more than enough.

Revolvers can and do jam. They just do it in different ways. Under extreme circumstances, like mud, sand, etc., revolvers gum up more. Jeff Cooper reported on a trip in the jungles of Southern Mexico; he had to take apart and clean a friend's revolver every night (beyond normal cleaning, removing the internals). His 1911 didn't require that effort.

That said, the type of malfuntions we normally face are more common in autos.

I prefer the single action trigger pull. The flatness of the auto is also nice. And the higher capacity, while not likely to be an advantage, isn't a disadvantage, so if all else is equal it is worth having.

I do like revolvers. S&W .44s and .45s, Colt New Service and Colt SAA, and others. I'm still kicking myself for selling a Model 29.

Back in the day, the ability to use very flat bullets was a terminal ballistics advantage over semis autos.
