Whatever happened to the sanctity of the handshake?
It used to mean something...respect, trust, an unspoken promise. It used to be used to seal a deal between two adults before lawyers and signatures were needed. Nowaday it means nothing at all. Almost like a formality when you meet someone. Or worse yet, it has evolved to a freaking half hug between two males. I hate HUGS! Esp from another guy. That is just gay...gay gay gay gay.....GAY! |

I don't even like doing handshakes so I never initiate them. I don't know where your hands have been, and don't want some asshole hurting one of my fingers or hand which would put me out of work for days. My hands are my life.
yes, I've turned down handshakes from people as well and pass it off as though I didn't even see their hand there by looking to the side and starting to talk about something. I've mainly done that with people I don't know or simply don't trust. Physical handshakes pass germs, spread disease, and there are actually a huge amount of injuries every year from it on a fragile part of the body. It's far past time to end the practice with people you don't trust. |

Quoted: Many folks' word means nothing. I experience this on a regular basis on EE here and several other places. Even when you call people out on their lack of integrity they shrug it off or get all pissy. This. Use to be a person was only as good as their word, now ..... ![]() |

Guys my age (I'm 21) are the worst. They try these weird handshakes, so I just wolf stare them until they give me a traditional handshake. Hard-O Wolfstare dude? Really? ![]() Really. If the stare doesn't work, I blade at 45 and piss on them to assert my dominance. Wanna see? |

Does watching the Josie Wales scene with Ten Bears give you fits? I have no problems dealing with any of those. I'm not a germ phobic person. I do however have clients who have injuries done to their hands from handshakes and "hand squeezing" at the local high school. In the past I've also had some asshole squeeze my hand overly hard. I did resist the urge to punch him in the face during the assault though. (No, I didn't press charges, but I was out of work for a week from a join injury completely unpaid) |

| along the same lines, what ever happened to eye contact when discussing something? I talk to quite a few folks for my work, and I've noticed more and more that younger generations talk to me while staring off in another direction, down at the ground, or while ooogling their smartphone. I was always taught when someone was speaking to you, you look them in the eye. |

I've already learned my lesson from personal experience as well as though some of my clients now. Including a big construction worker who found out someone else can squeeze his hand harder. He didn't work for quite some time. |

I can actually understand the fear of injuring your hands if your job revolves around it. My cousin wrecked his motorcycle and broke his hand. Couldn't design for about a month and a half. But I've never heard of someone being injured during a handshake. That's interesting.

Kinda like my space and given my training/work experience....I like people to be about three steps away. This is all just personal preference though. Not gonna answer your question....

But I've never heard of someone being injured during a handshake. That's interesting. - I screwed up the quote Cindy McCain in a sling from handshake AOTA Handshake safety |
|
I knew a guy that would give you a sort of woman's handshake. He was afraid of hurting you by accident. It was a real concern as he could easily do it. He would bend nails just to work out his fingers. An intense guy who could turn your hand bones to chips, but he was a very nice and polite type of guy.

Quoted: A sacred oath also means nothing now. I.E. : Chairman Maobama took an oath to defend the Constitution. So much for that. When I took a similar oath to join the USAF, I actually took it seriously. The Ol' Crew Chief I still remember when a man's word was his bond. When a handshake was as good as a contract. Too rare nowadays. |
