Oh well I took a chance and bought one. They're cheap enough so if it has a short life I won't be out much.

Since it's the company Firman selling them and ebay shows 8,573 units sold I have to wonder if these are new in the box because no way that many have been returned and refurbed.

Warranty on Harbor Freight shit kinda sucks. I went with a Champion 6250  watt inverter, has better warranty and parts support. It can also power all the essential things in my house through my panel. It was under $800 new, probably cheaper now.

Excellent deal IMO.

They are having a 25% off deal on their website.

Refurb 4,000/3200 watt dual fuel...with electric start...right at $407 ..SHIPPED.

I had to pick one up...very tempted to buy a smaller one too...on either that Ebay refurb one....or a new one very slightly bigger for about $285 shipped.

I had to call in to use the code on their front home page ( ID25)

That's the same model I'm talking about in this post: https://www.ar15.com/forums/General/Harbor-Freight-Inverter-Generators-NOW-OFFICIAL-BUDGET-GENERATOR-THREAD/5-2032324/?page=105#i109259804
It got the job done.

Thumbsup.jpeg...!

I've read tons of reviews...and youtuber vids.
Seems like an very good product....and great customer support.
I live on the Texas gulf coast...and absolutely hate not having some kind of backup for these storms after Harvey.

Sounds like you might need it sooner rather than later, stay safe.

Grab a TT30 male to regular power outlet adapter from somewhere that has RV stuff, hardware, farm store or outdoors place, you'll probably need one.

Like one of these:

Thanks for the tip!

Do you know which magnetic oil dipstick/cap works for this Firman Model?

This thread always costs me money, and saves me money

Now I just bought a new homestead and need to power a 240v well pump, and if possible 240v 60a hot water heater.

Is there any "portable"  inverter dual-fuel generator with enough wattage to power both these, and have juice left over for the rest of the house?

Local harbor freight has an open box predator 9000w normally $799 marked down to $589, which could possibly run one OR the other. But it's not an inverter generator nor dual fuel.

60 amps at 240 is 14400 watts. There isn't even a common plug type that's rated for 60 amps. You're well in to whole-house installed generator territory there... or tractor-powered PTO generator wired to the pole with welding cable.

Something to consider might be running the water heater on 120 instead of 240, which would reduce the amperage by 3/4 (15amps instead of 60). Or is this an on-demand heater? A propane powered on-demand water heater might be a better option than running a giant generator to heat water.

Here's a big inverter that has 240, I think there are ones a little larger somewhere but again, you're going to be running into issues with plugs and wire gauges at those kind of amperages.

Ok. I didn't think it would be possible with a portable generator and you've pretty much confirmed that. Thanks.

How does this work?  Isnt it going to double the amperage?  The 60A, 240V water heated dropped to 120V would require 120 amps?

No it's 1/4 the amperage, this would be for a tank-type 240 water heater. It's just resistors, at a lower voltage the draw less power and heat slower.

Sorry it's 1/2 the amperage, 1/4 the wattage.

They aren't cheap, but you can even buy them at Amazon.

Close.
Half the voltage into the same resistance is half the Amps.

Half the volts x half the Amps = 1/4 the Watts.

1/4 the watts = 1/4 the heat = 4x as long to heat 40 gallons of water.

Can someone help a generator newbie.
I bought a 2000w Champion several years ago from a thread in GD. It's sat unopened until a week ago when our neighborhood had a brownout for 8 hours.
Lesson learned.
I've since unpacked and setup the generator and have run it with zero to min load for about 2 hours.

Here's my question:

What household items can I expect to be able to power with this generator?

The two main items off the top of my head would be the fridge and a portable a/c unit that could keep at least one room cool.

read the stickers on all the appliances and add them up.

generally i can run our fridge, deep freeze, tv, fans and some lights. works fine with no hiccups.

adding a medium ac unit it will be fine but may have to rotate the fridge/freezer out with ac unit once and a while.

This.

Also, for the AC, get one that is an inverter with soft start, to minimize the amperage draw during start-up.

Buy a Kill-A-Watt meter. It will give you real amperage/watt usage for each load. Example; My one ton window shakers capacity plate says 9.8 Amps. Set on it's coldest setting/max fan it's pulling 6.5 Amps or 780 Watts. Well below what the plate says.

The can of worms is inrush amperage. Another big variable you need to consider on larger loads like well pumps and A/C compressors. You're gonna need a meter with the inrush feature to read this.

This is just a start, do your homework before you buy so you buy the right genny for your needs.

Almost 3 years after this thread took me down the generator rabbit hole (page79,80) we finally had an extended outage  that allowed me to run the nat gas converted genny for two and a half days. Worked great. Spending the extra time and money on the quick connects and outlet were well worth it.

I finally got to test the 13kw genset against the 4 ton ac unit.  One on one the generator lost. Tripped the 2 pole 35a breaker on the unit.

Has anyone added a soft start to their ac?  I just ordered a micro air flex.  In one YouTube video a guy runs a 4 ton unit with a 6kw generator after installing one.

Start up loads on motors are the killer. In our recent outage it was impossible to just power up the house as the startup loads on the fridges and A/C were too much. But with those loads unplugged could connect to the house and then connect them sequentially and all was well. Soft start is something that seems like it should be standard on many things.

We ran everything but the ac and stove without an issue. It was only 24 hours of run time because we shut it off at night.  I still haven't been able find the extra ng usage on my gas bill.  I was expecting it to be painful.

Your post says you had a 13kw generator; we were running a 3750 peak/3000 constant inverter generator.

If you are on a level or budget billing plan then you will have to look at your usage cubic feet to see the up tick. But really 24 hours will be a minor bump. If something happens that you need to run it for a couple weeks then you will see it on the bill.

This is something that I have wondered about a few times. Its seems to me like wide spread use of soft start devices would reduce the load on our grid. I don’t understand the physics behind the soft starts to understand the down side of them.

This Micro-air soft start I've been looking at was pricey when I installed the generator stuff but after a couple warm nights without ac it seems more reasonable and back then I was dealing with a 27 year old ac. :)  Now it's a 2 year old unit.  There is also many more cheaper options like a patent has run out but those all seem to have some horror stories in the reviews.  The M-A looks to have an almost cult like following and it's difficult to find someone that's had an issue and several stories of the engineers working with them to find a solution for the equipment they are connecting.

I'll post an update once I get it installed and use it but it might be another couple years.

Those micro-air soft starts are getting pretty popular. Pricey, but to be able to use an AC with a small to mid-size generator seems like it would be worth it. Especially of you have kids or elderly you need to take care of. I'd like to try one, but I need to get and amp meter to check the inrush and running amps. Looking at a Klein CL900. I already have a Kill-O-Watt meter. Right now, we have a Champion 2000W Dual Fuel Inverter, but I am looking at their 9000W Tri-Fuel Inverter for the NG port I had installed.

I really wanted the champion tri fuel but they weren't available when I was shopping.  Is 9000 the running or peak?  I found that they derate from gas to propane and again to NG.  I think my 13k is probably around 9k on the NG (which is why I got as big of a genny as I could).

The soft starts are pricey, especially the Micros, but i saw several people blaming the off brands for burning up their compressor.  Don't know if that's true or not but I just got a new one.  I couldn't justify it when I did the plumbing and electrical and bought the genny but now thinking about having to drag out a window unit makes it reasonable a couple years from the initial investment.  Second, how much more does it cost to get a genset big enough to run your house ac?

But we'll see, I maybe back in a couple years complaining about replacing a compressor.

9000W is peak. I think NG running is 5875W, which is fine for us because most of our stuff is NG. Our AC is a small 2 ton unit and our water heater is a 120gal electric that will hold warm water for at least 3 days when shut off. When that WH gives up the ghost, we're going to switch over to a NG WH. Already have a drop for it and a tap for a NG generator ready outside.

FYI, there's a $90 off coupon on the Firman remanufactured generators on ebay.
Just bought the 4000w version for $397 delivered.

Can someone smarter than me (that's most of you) check my thinking on my quest for an updated portable Gen.

I've been running a Champion Dual Fuel 9000W Starting Gas / 8100 Starting LP and 6500 running watts.
We connect it to the house panel using a transfer switch and the L14-30R cord.
Works fine except any device connected to a Battery Backup UPS will not work, because the UPS senses dirty power and will not charge.

So, I am on the quest for a Dual Fuel (propane) Inverter Generator with a 30a L14-30R output.  I'd like to be at least 6500 running watts, more is better.

The HF Predator 9500 Watt is gas only.
The HF Predator 5000 Watt Dual fuel  lacks the 240v 30A L14-30R plug.

Options?  Suggestions?

Are you actually running 240v loads?

I don't know if 240/120 inverter generators have the same limitation as traditional generators as far as half only of the available wattage on each 120 side of the 240. Can't seem to find an answer to that question.

As far as plug styles it's pretty trivial to just make whatever cord you need.

A 30 amp connection is really at the limit with a 6500 watt generator.

Is there not another long running generator thread or am I imagining things?

I believe this is it for the Firman WH03242F

I haven not bought it yet...looking for a lower price on these as i'm in no hurry.

I found the item number in the owners manual online...and dropped that number into Amazon...and comes up as this and reviewers say this is the one for that model

https://www.amazon.com/GenExhaust-Firman-Generator-330723531-Anodized/dp/B0871PLV6T

I'll edit this post if/when i find a cheaper option...most likely on ebay and a different manufacturer

Edit..search same part number on ebay...one listed for $25-ish.   for some reason won't let me post link

I have the bigger version, the 2700w unit, and it has been pretty solid.

In the past, some of the UPS systems had a small switch in the back which would allow you to change the voltage tolerance.  The typical UPS wants clean 120v input and will not work if it's at 118.5v, for example.  The switch would allow the UPS to work with the lower voltage.  Now, the lower voltage and dirtier power might affect the longevity of the batteries, but at least they might run and power your systems.

Check the manual on your batteries or maybe look into UPS systems that work with the unclean power.

Got the Easy Start installed this weekend.  Hardest part was finding a place to mount it. Most noticable thing is how quietly the unit starts now. You do not hear it inside the house. Just got connected via bluetooth to check its stats.  Unit is a 4ton with 104lra. Now starting with 23.6 amps.

@TheKurnal

Here is a List From Generator Bible

That meets your requirement. I trust Champion, Wen, Westinghouse, personally.

Nice!! They are expensive, but really do change the game for what’s possible with a portable generator.

Micro Air does have a cult following, but it’s for a reason. I was converted a couple years back and been preaching since then.

I ordered a Champion 2500 duel fuel from Amazon $499 plus tax.  It will be here this Friday.  I plan on running on propane.  I have 3 tanks already.   I already own a Coleman 1850 generator that looks like a pressure washer.  This thread convinced me to upgrade especially with what’s happening weather wise recently.

Nice unit. You'll enjoy it. I finally got to use mine for 28 hours. I was so excited that the power went out.

Give it an oil change at one hour, and then at 5 hours. Then, per the manual's interval. Lots of metallic flakes come out of them when they're new because these small generators don't have pressurized oil systems with oil filters.
