I was hoping someone here might have some ideas or tips on what to do next.

I have a 500gb Seagate SATA harddrive(my first mistake) and until about two weeks ago worked just fine.  i go to start my computer one day and it's gone.

I figured it might have been a virus i got but without it working i really don't know.  I purchased a external enclosure today and tried to see if i could get the drive to work on

a different computer.  No dice.

I can hear the drive spin up and it wasn't dropped.  Going into disk management shows no drive, chkdisk nothing, etc.

I'm at my wits end because it has some photos and other things i need to recover.

I have tried replacing the controller board for one from an identical drive twice.

Once it did not work, and once it fried the controller board and left the host drive usless as well.

For another piece of shit Seagate?  yeah right.  I'll chalk it up to experience.  I will continue to buy only Western Digital hard drives.  I have a 160gb WD IDE hard drive with 6+ years of trouble free use.  The other 4 drives are all anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 years old and are also built like tanks.  Never again will i be tempted by price to GB ratio again.

Good luck.

They're ALL (manufacturers) going to have their issues at some point.

I went through a spat where WD drives were dropping like flies... but they're great now.

The best suggestion I can make, no matter what company you use for HD storage: Backup FREQUENTLY... and not just one, but multiple backups.
