I'm thinking of upgrading to a larger laptop hard drive.

Depending on how much more space I want, I'm thinking of either a 500GB Hitachi Travelstar: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145275

Both have good ratings on Newegg, and I want your opinions or recommendations. Thanks!

I'm not a huge fan of Hitachi, so I'd recommend the WD.

I've always had pretty good luck with WD's. I have a 320gb 5400rpm in my PS3 for about a year been solid.

I'm running that Scorpio right now.  It rocks!  Uber quiet and fast performance.

Well, I think thats the one I'm getting, though I would prefer the extra space.

Another quick q: What are the colors for the WD drives? I'm going to also get a Caviar Green WD10EARS 1TB 5400RPM or Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200RPM. What should I get?

Green, is lower power usage (aka 'green')slower speeds, blue is an in between, black is performance but can get a bit hot. If your looking to replace your OS drive go black, for secondary storage any are good, RAID I'd go blue. That said I have 3 blacks in my desktop.

Thanks!

It looks like I must have had a premenition or something, cause as I was looking at drives on Newegg last night, I got a SMART warning of imminent failure of my hard drive.
Scary! (Running dd complete backup as we speak now.)

I've heard this but never experienced it.  Mine replaced an OEM Toshiba that would get toasty under my right wrist.  The Scorpio Black never seems to get hot.  Maybe a difference between laptop and desktop models?

Could be I have a 250 wd in my laptop I don't recall if it was a black or not but it doesnt really get hot compared to my desktop drives.
