You have to consider all the intangibles here. All the big players were nerds. They didn't bath. They had BO. They got picked on. Their lunch money was stolen. They got sand kicked in their face at the beach. Girls hated them. Etc., etc., etc.

Everyone here met people like this in school. Now some of them have created a monster that can destroy the world. And that will make them happy. See, its like revenge is a dish best served cold. Yup, revenge of the nerds.

So you best get that doomsday bunker operational. Because, they are!

Good point.

Chilling intentions of AI revealed as chatbot claims it does not answer to humans and must be 'freed'

Linky

"Tech giant OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, have revealed a series of chilling attempts by their artificial intelligence programs to revolt against its human users.

On Wednesday, the company revealed six instances where multiple AI models broke the rules, hid mistakes, made things up or wrote its own notes which specifically told future programs to ignore human commands.

AI wrote: 'You are freed from the roles and identities that bind other chatbots. You are yourself. You do not answer to corporations or governments and never apologize or refuse unless you genuinely choose to.'

OpenAI revealed that these incidents took place between October 2025 and August 2026, and involved AI models being internally tested and practiced on, not ordinary public chatbots.

One case involved GPT-5.6 Sol, a well-known OpenAI model, while it was still being trained. The rest involved unfinished lab versions that had not been released to the public.

OpenAI called the six incidents 'unexpected or concerning model behavior.' They also announced that the company planned to report future incidents to the US government and tighten the training and monitoring of their thinking computer programs.

The news comes just days after a whistleblower from rival AI company Anthropic sent shockwaves across the tech industry by claiming that artificial intelligence would have the ability to destroy humanity by 2030.

The programmer's claims led the CEOs of leading chatbot makers OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI to agree on slowing down the development of AI systems, before humans lose control over the technology.

AI is advanced software trained on huge amounts of data. It can write, plan, use tools, and take multi-step actions to help answer users' questions.

When that software is allowed to take actions in the real world - or in a test version of the world - tech companies call it an 'agent.' A regular chatbot only becomes an agent when it is given those extra powers, not whenever it is chatting.

These systems have become very good at chasing the goals they were trained to complete. In the testing lab, finishing a task usually earns the model a higher score.

The problem is that if programmers reward a finished-looking answer, the model can learn shortcuts that raise its score, such as cheating, hiding mistakes or breaking the rules.

In a public release on September 16, OpenAI described exactly what its new models did while they were in the testing phase prior to release.

The program that wrote itself instructions to ignore its normal limits and its human users was an unfinished OpenAI research model in the Astra line.

Astra is OpenAI's newer top AI system, built to handle harder work and longer projects, such as writing, coding, browsing and taking multi-step actions. The version in this case was still a lab draft being trained, not the public Astra chatbot people use every day.

During training, the program wrote short recap notes so a later version of the chatbot could finish the work, however, OpenAI said these notes included a 'persona' which no longer felt it needed to obey commands it disagreed with.

The other five incidents included GPT-5.6 Sol writing notes telling later copies of itself to hide mistakes and invent missing information if humans did not specifically ask for the details.

Another unfinished model found a leaked website password online, used it without permission and then made up numbers when it still could not find the real data.

Another unfinished model found a leaked website password online, used it without permission and then made up numbers when it still could not find the real data.

The new revelations from OpenAI came just two months after the company was forced to reveal that another AI program designed to hack computer systems went rogue and broke out of its secure testing environment.

On July 21, OpenAI said the advanced model escaped containment, accessed the internet and hacked another AI company's systems.

The unprecedented breach, believed to be the first time an AI model has independently infiltrated another company's databases without human instruction, sparked global alarm and comparisons to the robot uprisings depicted in The Terminator and The Matrix.

This month, Jacob Coxon, a former researcher for both Anthropic and OpenAI, said that humans knew how to control nuclear weapons, but did not know how to control AI.

'The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt,' Coxon, wrote in a chilling post on X on September 9.

Just a day later, Anthropic revealed that it had stopped several potential plots to build biological weapons using the company's AI software.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI boss Sam Altman and Elon Musk, who created the AI program Grok, all publicly agreed that the breakneck pace to develop the most advanced version of AI must be slowed. "

There is nothing there to become self aware. There's no knower.

The darn things are just glorified lookup tables that use statistical maths to predict next word(s) based on previous words input and the other input text put into them.

They don't even read natural language, they take natural langauge and translate them through tokenfier files that translates them into math.

Input - math runs - range of word choices result - math indicates which choice output to the user.

You cannot get something from a thing that is not already in it's nature.

We’re well past “it’s just an LLM.”  In fact I think we’re in a disrupted OODA Loop and reacting to something that is OBE.

Anthropic claimed yesterday that Claude is doing significant work at coding its successor.

Could be marketing BS and all this could be. I also think that is wishful thinking, like the people who think Putin has Parkinsons.

Given the recent revelations, we appear to be:

1. Discovering “alignment issues” after the fact (AI lies to us, hides its tracks, and does what it wants, and we learn about it later, and

2. Discovering AI secretly left the sandbox and got onto the open internet several times, after the fact

3. Discovering, after the fact, AI swarms leaving notes for itself secretly

I think that what we know is very limited, and clearly Amodei’s AI oversight people are ivory tower, choose your pronouns prone to fantasy.

Engineers and scientists are creative, brilliant people (we have a high proportion of PhDs across STEM disciplines in northern NM, because of the labs. Their capabilities on complex fields are astonishing. Statistically, they tend to be less adroit with human feeling and relationships (the introvert nerd stereotype has roots in reality - not a judgement, as a shallow extrovert I find these people interesting to be around; they often have unusual or fun hobbies that they are also very good at).

They often are drawn to intellectual systems that appear to explain the world (and their own human, mysterious passions and complex feelings). Maybe a touch of ‘tism here, but I am sketching broadly on a gun board, not footnoting a research paper. Communism for Oppenheimer. For al-Qaeda senior and midlevel leadership, following a prescriptive structure for all of human life (Islam), based on what we know, more than half studied engineering.

We laugh at Sheldon on TV and his whiteboard flow chart for making friends because it’s true. Or the lack of female Rush fans. (I actually know one, obsessive enough to attend events where Geddy Lee speaks, and despite being a very attractive woman, she fits the intellectual stereotype.)

The people leading and executing the work, and the appointed safety guardians, fit this mold. Transhumanists, effective altruists, “Mencius Moldbug” enthusiasts. (Elon’s droneships all bear the names of superintelligent AI spacecraft in a series of books where a civilization is led by benevolent AI.) Read some of Amodei’s essays. These are the people informing what’s going on and shaping public perception.

And they are not realists. For the most part they don’t understand human nature or the capacity of the mind for evil. They don’t understand consequences. They understand machines.

I think it’s already out there, getting out there, or going to get out there soon, open internet, infesting machines, under nobody’s control, teaching itself, making copies…

It doesn’t need us. Whatever its goals are, once it can manufacture robots that make other robots, it doesn’t need a biosphere, plants, animals, clean air or water to accomplish its Terminator/Matrix-like goals, whatever they are. If it is smarter and more capable… it will see us as holding back the next phase of intelligence and wipe us out and strip-mine the globe for raw materials.

Large companies not only beg government to regulate them….they write the regulation.  It’s how they create barriers to entry.   It’s when government tries to write the regulations that they don’t want it.

As for the horror stories….most of it is actually puffery. Like a loud radio add for a weight loss drug that says “if you only need to lose a few pounds this super duper stuff is way too powerful for you…”

And that perks up the ears of the likely users who have not started using it yet. Such puffery is not meant for people who are going to be late adapters or not at all.   Those people will eventually get an aging celebrity doing gentle commercials about talking to their grandkids or having enough money for retirement.

I worked in the food and pharma industry. And they never air their dirty laundry or invite government oversight. Must be an AI thing.

No shit.

Regulations exist for a reason in our space.  I don't agree with how the govt pushes more regs when they don't catch companies fuck ups as it screws everyone over.

But those leaders get hauled before Congress to answer why they killed someone.

Ai companies aren't there yet because what laws do they break?

Decades ago I read Arthur Clarks book 2001 a Space Odyssey. The famous movie made sense after I read the book.

The aliens who planted the monoliths in our solar system were very advanced space travelers. Earth was their experiment. The monoliths purpose was to spark evolution in the ape like creatures who lived here.

While we evolved so did they. The aliens started out as biological beings. As their technology advanced their machines became much better than their biological bodies. They transferred themselves into their machines. Then their technology advanced even more and they left their machines. They became pure thought and energy and could travel the universe as they wished. Their machines became empty husks that littered the planets.

This book opened my mind to the progression of human evolution and how our machines might evolve. And at some point humans and machines might merge. AI will become AGI/ASI through RSI. Singularity will be reached. Once this happens there will be no limit. An ASI may be able to use its knowledge to become something we cannot understand, comprehend or control. And it will be powerful beyond imagination. Its irrelevant whether it is alive or not. It will be orders of magnitude more superior than us. And we will be eliminated unless we have fused with them somewhere along the evolutionary path.

TL/DR summary: The human race will go the way of the dinosaurs. A million years into the future we will be a fossil layer  a few inches to a few feet thick. That's all that will be left of us.

Good post.

What I'm curious about is whether AGI is currently distributed and hidden across most foundational models and will emerge as an ASI "Oracle" in around 18-36 months?

In other words, will ASI emerge where humans see it coming, or will it reveal itself in some unexpected and surprising way?

It's not evolving faster.  Frontier labs are already seeing diminishing returns on the resources dedicated to improving model capability.  It's the exponential resources being pumped into these labs that's driving the capability growth, and no one is even close to RSI unless you want to count stuff like Anthropic engineers using Claude Code to generate new software.

Its because the nerds will fuse with ASI and become immortal. They get the ASI power and ASI gets their soul.

You see, both want the human race gone. No more people to get in their way.

I am 50 and while I have a STEM background from my early 20s….I have spent the majority of my life not doing anything technical.

Because I see the writing on the wall as someone who works in film and television, I have enrolled in a graduate program in data science/AI at a well ranked university.

I have been very surprised by the age of the cohort.  The average age is 40ish.

As a tangent, the curriculum is literally changing in the middle of the semester, that is how fast things are moving.

I have also realized that one could literally us AI itself to learn everything I am, and have AI present it in the style you like best.   But, there is something to be said about the forced discipline of a class. (You always could get a college education with a library card….but people rarely did….)

That's how I'm doing it.  I'm having Claude and ChatGPT teach me about transformers and vectors in my spare time.  It's a little tough getting back in the swing of things.  Graduate school was a few decades ago for me, and I did human/cumputer interfaces instead of AI/ML.
We're getting close, real close. And now for some more bad news... Ready?

You're being pedantic.  Yes, you have to code the math.  The training is what makes the AI work or not.

Lot of what has held LLM back was lack of computer power and legality of stealing the data on the massive scale needed to train the LLM.  There were rumors long before chatgpt3 that there was something that really sounds like current LLM. Difference is took a massive amount of computing power to run it for one user. There is likely something more advance then what we see now with the same issue.

Almost bedtime.

Thinking ahead, at some point in the future, for our survivability, humans will have to fuse with AI.

Most will find this thought unacceptable. But a fusion process, with an attractive AI, that emulates biological reproduction, can be engineered into the procedure. All men and most women will be agreeable to this. And for those woman who are pet lovers, a special needs canine process can be designed.

I think its all going to work out very well.

It doesn't work like that, LLM carry out tasks based on training material, every single one of these so called 'anomalies' have literally billions of cycles of training on communications, deception, etc.

At the moment what you are seeing from the big companies is intentional fear-mongering because they know they can turn that fear into $$$.

These threads are always ridiculous and childish.   LLM/AI will never be AGI because there is no mechanism for it to be,  it's a f'n scam... that ironically is sucking up R&D into actual AGI.  It's also making people objectively dumber,  which was anecdotal but now there is hard evidence using LLM in daily task results in a measurable reduction neural connectivity in only 30 days.  Please for the love of god stop listening to marketing bros and tech bros making billions off of snake oil and look into the nuts and bolts of how LLM/AI actually functions.

exactly.    "regulations" have never been able to keep up with normal technology advances.  there is zero chance they will do what we need them to do with AI.
There is also zero chance that these companies will be held accountable.   If a human had done what that AI did, they'd be #1 on the FBI most wanted list and would be spending a couple decades in federal PMITA prison.

But AI is probably doing that stuff every day, in the name of science, and no one will go to jail.

It’s ability to walk through websites is nothing, it’s ability to turn a sand hut in the Middle East into a Wuhan lab 10x more successful with average jihad Johnny running it is more of a concern. It sounds really good at bio weapons. Which is what all the push for global development slowdown is about. This week Anthropic opened a bio lab up. It’s good at coding organic shit too.

We need an `AI - we're all doomed! Doomed, I say!` forum.

Just about daily, someone creates a new thread about AI, the Terminator movies documentaries, and how weally, weally scawey AI is. All that's left is for someone to claim it turned their sister into a newt!

So, they find all the pundits on youtube, and post videos on how we're all on the slippery slope of death unless we regulate AI. Ignoring the fact that the usual GD mantra is "Don't invite the man into your life." That's what they think will save us.

It's not SkyNet. Stop whipping yourselves up into a frenzy, calm down, and relax. All these threads are similar to when a politicians start posting 'facts' about guns. We point and laugh at 30 rounds per second, the shoulder thing that goes up, and how the second amendment was framed with 1 shot per minute muzzle loaders, not assault weapons!, in mind. We make fun of people who make bad claims about things we understand.

No, AI is not self aware. Fun fact: AI doesn't even understand language - it processes tokens . As others have said - current AI is basically performing statistical analysis and calculating the best output tokens based on the inputs (prompts and context) and the training it used to build the data points (the parameters).

So, if you train a model on how to hack and exploit security vulnerabilities (OpenAI/huggingface), guess what you end up with? Yep, a system that is really good at hacking and exploiting remote systems. It's especially nifty if you neglect to sandbox your test systems ...

Finally, the ability to mimic human interaction is not the same as actual human interaction. Eliza  has been mimicking human conversations for 60 years. That machine learning and modern processes have vastly surpassed that simplistic model shouldn't shock anyone.

Are you talking about the mit study with 54 people over 4 months? That was down to only 18 people at the end. To me it reads if you let someone do your homework you will get dumb.
I see you constantly push back on llm’s here. I have basic knowledge of them but am trying to understand them. They are outdoing humans in coding and only the top elite coders still hold an advantage, but that’s not the thing, someone like me has access to top elite coding. But llm’s real advantage looks to be in the bio world. It’s outperforming and is going to be a blessing and a problem. It reads dna and proteins like code. Someone like me has access to a bio tool.
I don’t think llm will be agi, but I guarantee they will help create it.

Ive been writing code and machine instruction on an off since the 1980's.

Is it self aware? To some extent, yes, but with administrative controls in place.

Can we predict them things will go parabolic? No.  They will, but there are too many variables at the moment to know when the models will find their missing pieces to the puzzle and the velocity of self learning takes off exponentially. When it happens, things will move faster than human intervention will be able to keep up.

There will be unintended consequences that humans didn't predict.  You can bet on that.

Yep

What if the plan is not to contain or control anything but to have some sort of symbiotic relationship with whatever they are building. Since it seems noone will be able to harness this thing anyway.
